The Credit Manager serves as the operational and strategic leader of Northeastern Supply’s Credit and Accounts Receivable function, overseeing a portfolio of approximately $24 million in outstanding receivables across 39 branch locations in five states. This is a hands-on leadership role: the Manager carries a direct account load covering one-third of the company’s customer base, manages and mentors a two-person Credit Specialist team, and is the primary point of accountability for the credit quality and cash flow performance of the organization. The Credit Manager reports directly to the Controller and is expected to be a decisive, independent contributor who can balance day-to-day execution with long-term credit strategy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Account Management (Direct Portfolio)

  • Manage and monitor a direct portfolio of customer accounts representing approximately one-third of total company AR
  • Review account aging, payment patterns, and credit risk on a regular basis to identify issues before they escalate
  • Make timely credit decisions on new and existing accounts, including setting and adjusting credit limits and terms
  • Contact customers directly to resolve past-due balances, disputes, and billing discrepancies
  • Visit customers in person as needed to establish business relationships and reduce credit exposure
  • Analyze credit applications and financial information to determine appropriate terms of sale

Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Directly supervise, mentor, and develop two Credit Specialists, each responsible for their own regional account portfolio
  • Set individual and team performance expectations tied to measurable AR metrics such as DSO, aging percentages, and collection rates
  • Conduct regular one-on-one reviews with each Specialist to assess portfolio health and provide coaching and skill development
  • Train Credit Specialists on credit analysis, customer communication, legal instruments, and company policy
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional growth within the Credit Department

Collections & Risk Management

  • Oversee and direct the full collection process for all delinquent accounts across all three regions
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with third-party collection agencies and collection attorneys
  • Manage the monthly Charge-Off Schedule: review, approve, and communicate write-offs to appropriate management and staff
  • Maintain and enforce security agreements, personal guarantees, mechanic’s liens, payment bonds, and other legal instruments
  • Stay current on applicable federal and state laws governing credit, collections, bankruptcy, liens, and judgments
  • Monitor returned checks and other high-risk account activity; take corrective action as warranted

Reporting, Analysis & Cash Flow

  • Prepare accurate AR aging reports and distribute to all General Managers and sales staff on a regular schedule
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and variance analyses and present findings to the President and the Controller
  • Track and manage receivable performance against budget; identify trends and recommend corrective actions
  • Make annual adjustments to credit process controls to improve collection efficiency and cash flow
  • Recommend and implement changes to company credit policy as market conditions or internal data warrant

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with General Managers at branch locations to maintain credit quality at the individual branch level
  • Collaborate with the sales force to balance revenue growth with appropriate credit risk
  • Coordinate with accounting on cash application, reconciliations, and year-end reporting requirements
  • Resolve escalated disputes between customers and internal departments as they relate to receivables and risk
  • Participate in trade and credit industry associations to maintain and expand professional knowledge

Administrative & Compliance

  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation in all customer credit files
  • Manage and direct the cash application function within the department
  • Ensure Credit Department staff adhere to all company policies, procedures, and the Employee Handbook
  • Review and monitor staff compliance with security agreement policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by the President

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a high-volume, multi-location AR portfolio with values in the $15M–$30M range
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and the general ledger, with the ability to connect AR activity to financial statement impact
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate professionally with customers, attorneys, and senior management
