Clinical Assistant Professor - Optometry

Job Summary

Full-time temporary, twelve-month clinical faculty position in the Oklahoma College of Optometry. Responsible for providing direct clinical care and clinical teaching. Official duty station will be at the Cherokee Nation Outpatient Health Center optometry clinic in Tahlequah or other Cherokee Nation Rural Eye Program clinics. Clinic assignment may involve evenings or weekends or may be scheduled at external clinics within the Rural Eye Program. The Associate or Assistant Dean will determine your specific assignments.

MAJOR DUTIES

The majority of your employment hours will be spent in the Cherokee Nation Outpatient Health Center and/or the Rural Eye Program clinics. At a minimum, you will be expected to: 1) meet clinical assignments and work closely with the clinic administration to optimize student experience and patient care; 2) participate in activities which lead to your professional growth while enhancing and complementing the mission and goals of the university and the College of Optometry; and 3) manage the clinical setting and fulfill the responsibilities required by the Cherokee Nation contract. Finally, your presence at your college’s commencement ceremonies is an important part of your role as a member of the faculty.

Your performance will be evaluated during the course of the year, according to procedures described in the Faculty Handbook and the promotion guidelines of the College of Optometry. Northeastern State University places a high priority on clinical performance, teaching excellence and competent advising of students in your clinic, and will require evidence of satisfactory achievement in these areas. Student evaluations of your teaching and clinical activities will be carried out each semester. You will be expected to demonstrate continued professional and scholarly growth, maintain technological expertise relevant to your academic assignment, and contribute to the life and growth of the University community.

Knowledge Required By The Position

Experience in full-scope Primary Care is required. Preference will be given to applicants with advanced academic degrees, residency training, extensive clinical experience, or teaching experience.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for

compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements, patient care policies and

procedures, prescription eyewear fabrication standards, insurance company policies, and college policies and

procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in

application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of related patient services and technical duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.

CONTACTS

Contacts are typically with students, Residents, patients, faculty, staff, physicians, vendors, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is typically performed in a clinical setting or lab. Work includes sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending. The employee may lift heavy objects, and will use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

Supervisory role will include supervising students and Residents in clinic and may include supervising student workers and other clinic staff persons.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants’ qualifications must include the O.D. degree and eligibility for licensure to practice the full scope of Optometry in Oklahoma.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in full-scope Primary Care is required. Preference will be given to applicants with advanced academic degrees, residency training, extensive clinical experience, or teaching experience.

Annual salary $115,000.00 with excellent benefits, including generous leave time.
