Vision Rehabilitation Therapist/Orientation & Mobility Specialist

The Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany is a vibrant and growing not-for-profit human services agency that has served blind and visually impaired Capital Region residents for over 100 years (located in Albany, NY). 

NABA is currently seeking and duel certified Vision Rehab Therapist/O&M Instructor, to work full-time, 35 hours a week.  Reporting to the Director of Community Services, the full-time Vision Rehab Therapist/O&M Instructor would be responsible for providing evaluations and training in safe adaptive travel skills and ways to establish orientation to blind and visually impaired consumers, including:

• Evaluate the needs and capabilities of each consumer for the purpose of establishing his/her rehabilitation teaching plan, providing appropriate instruction using adaptive techniques and/or equipment to address and achieve the goals of this plan.
• Evaluate the needs and observe and interpret capabilities of each consumer for the purpose of establishing his/her orientation & mobility teaching plan, providing appropriate instruction using adaptive techniques and/or equipment to address and achieve the goals of this plan
• Monitor and communicate the needs of the Rehabilitation Teaching and Community Services departments, and executing special duties as required to address those needs.
• Schedule lessons and coordinate programs in a timely and efficient manner in order to meet contractual and agency demands; this includes independently scheduling lessons and coordinating programs in a timely and efficient manner in order to meet contractual and agency demands
• Maintain and submit accurate and complete notes on each consumer serves, including reports and other records as required for program and administrative use.
• Ensure successful completion of each consumer’s service plan by attending case conferences, routinely communicating with the rehab team, and maintaining confidentiality of consumer information
• Travel to consumers’ homes, work sites, or educational facilities to provide training and evaluations.
• Complete other duties/projects as assigned by your Supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Visual Disabilities (including Orientation & Mobility) from an accredited college.
• Experience in human services and/or medical office experience beneficial.
• Knowledge of basic computer applications, (ie internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).
• Certified Teacher of the Visually Impaired or Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist or Certified Low Vision Therapist
• Eligible for certification with ACVREP
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, organizational and problem-solving skills

Physical Demands

In order to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position successfully, the employee must be able to:

·         Access own transportation (to and from appointments within agency’s service area)

·         Communicate clearly and precisely in both face-to-face, written, and telephone interactions;

·         Evaluate data and exercise discretion in making decisions and determining consequences;

·         Operate or maneuver modern office and computer equipment;

·         Lift and maneuver low vision equipment, some weighing up to 45 lbs.

·         Exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles in order to solve problems.
