The job of Regional Mathematics Coordinator is done for the purpose of developing and supporting K-12 student success in mathematics by implementing research-based instructional strategies, providing leadership and expertise to educators and administrators, and collaborating with member districts. This role works closely with NEWESD 101 staff, local districts, and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to create a coherent, regional system that improves mathematics proficiency across the K-12 continuum.

This position reports to the Director, Center for Teaching and Learning Services, Birth-Grade 12.

  • Designs, coordinates, and delivers professional learning for the purpose of increasing teacher content knowledge, pedagogy, and instructional strategies aligned with state standards.
  • Aligns work with OSPI, other educational service districts (ESDs), and other mathematics leadership organizations for the purpose of fully developing and implementing a statewide delivery system of state and regional-level professional development.
  • Stays current with Washington State educational reforms, mathematics research, and best practices for the purpose of providing leadership in K-12 mathematics instruction.
  • Supports district teams in lesson design, data analysis, peer observation, and evidence-based instructional improvement.
  • Collaborates with districts for the purpose of aligning curriculum, identifying supplementary materials, and strengthening mathematics education systems.
  • Supports teachers and administrators in using diagnostic and formative assessments for the purpose of improving instruction and student outcomes.
  • Coordinates audits of mathematics instructional delivery systems for the purpose of ensuring program effectiveness.
  • Partners with principals, teachers, program directors, and other stakeholders for the purpose of improving student achievement in mathematics.
  • Develops intervention plans for areas of greatest need and provides targeted support to schools and districts for the purpose of improving student outcomes.
  • Builds and maintains public/private partnerships for the purpose of enhancing mathematics education.
  • Collaborates with coordinators in other content areas (e.g., science, English/language arts) for the purpose of developing and delivering a cohesive professional development program while fostering strong collegial relationships.
  • Prepares training materials, reports, correspondence, and other documentation for the purpose of supporting regional mathematics initiatives.
  • Responds to inquiries from educators, administrators, and stakeholders for the purpose of providing accurate information and guidance.
  • Provides mentoring and coaching support for instructional staff.
  • Leads special projects and initiatives for the purpose of strengthening K-12 mathematics systems.

SKILLS are required to preform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: 

  • preparing and maintaining accurate records, 
  • providing professional development in K-12 mathematics content and instructional practices in a variety of formats and for a variety of audiences, 
  • competence with all related technology and ability to learn job-specific applications, and 
  • experience in leadership with formal instructional coaching or administrative experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE is required to read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: 

  • concepts of grammar and punctuation, 
  • school restructuring processes, 
  • performance-based assessments and scoring rubrics, 
  • mathematics concepts/courses, and Washington State mathematics standards, and
  • research-based practices in K-12 mathematics education.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others and work with data utilizing specific, defined processes. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.

Experience          

Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required. Experience teaching mathematics and instructional coaching experience
in the K-12 setting preferred.

Education          

Bachelor’s degree in job related area. Teaching certificate with mathematics endorsement preferred.

Certificates & Licenses   

Valid driver's license, required auto insurance, and reliable personal transportation.

Clearances          

WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee’s expense).
