Installation/Service Technician (Combination Technician)
Location: Long Pine & Stuart, Nebraska
Residency Requirement: Due to on-call responsibilities, the successful candidate must reside within the general service area of Holt or Rock County, Nebraska, or be willing to relocate within an agreed-upon timeframe.
Position Overview
Northeast Nebraska Telephone Company (NNTC) is seeking a motivated and customer-focused Combination Technician to join our team. This entry-level position is ideal for someone who enjoys technology, problem-solving, and working directly with customers.
As a Combination Technician, you'll install, maintain, and troubleshoot customer equipment and services across NNTC's 100% fiber-optic network. You'll work in both residential and commercial settings, installing voice, television, and high-speed internet services while delivering outstanding customer service.
No telecommunications experience is required—we provide on-the-job training and opportunities for professional growth.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair customer premise equipment and telecommunications services.
- Install voice, television, and high-speed internet services in residential and commercial locations.
- Perform inside wiring, equipment preparation, and customer premise installations.
- Assist with customer drop installation and related outside plant work as needed.
- Test, configure, and verify proper operation of installed equipment and services.
- Diagnose service issues and resolve problems efficiently while providing excellent customer service.
- Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, contractors, and other business partners.
- Read and interpret service orders, installation instructions, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Operate company vehicles, tools, testing equipment, and other job-related equipment safely and effectively.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while securing tools and equipment at the end of each workday.
- Adapt to changing technology, equipment, procedures, and business needs.
- Work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency service calls as needed.
- Travel throughout NNTC's service area and occasionally outside the region, including overnight travel when required.
- Successfully complete all required training, certifications, and coursework.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Telecommunications experience is preferred but not required.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new technologies.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents and installation instructions.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment.
- Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or certificate in Telecommunications, Computer Technology, Electrical Technology, Networking, or a related field.
- Three or more years of telecommunications experience.
- Experience with fiber optic splicing or fiber network maintenance.
- Experience locating underground fiber facilities.
- Experience with hosted or non-hosted PBX telephone systems.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting using team lifting techniques or mechanical assistance.
- Climb ladders and work at varying heights.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Work indoors and outdoors while performing physically demanding tasks.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and company vehicles.
- Possess sufficient vision, hearing, color recognition, and manual dexterity to install and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in residential homes, commercial businesses, and outdoor environments.
- Regular exposure to changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, mud, and uneven terrain.
- Frequent travel throughout NNTC's service area.
- Participation in an on-call rotation is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency outage restoration.
- Occasional overnight travel may be required for training or business needs.
