Job Summary

The Northeast Arc helps people with disabilities become full participants in the community; choosing for themselves how to live, learn, work, socialize and play. The Skills Trainer plays a meaningful, community-facing role within Northeast Arc's Personal Care Management (PCM) program, directly supporting that mission every day.

The Northeast Arc Personal Care Management (PCM) program serves about 5,000 individuals living in communities throughout northeastern Massachusetts, Greater Boston, and the Metro West area. As a Skills Trainer, you will work at the heart of this program, helping people with long-term disabilities navigate the MassHealth Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program so they can live at home with greater independence and confidence.

The Skills Trainer assists service recipients in the application for and management of Personal Care Attendant (PCA) program services. This includes assessing personal care needs, guiding consumers through the application process, and providing hands-on education so they are equipped to successfully manage their own care. The role combines office and community-based work, offering variety and the opportunity to build genuine, lasting relationships with the individuals you serve.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the personal care needs of individuals in collaboration with a nurse and occupational therapist, and prepare PCA applications for submission to the consumer's insurer.
  • Teach individuals how to successfully hire, train, supervise, and pay their own Personal Care Attendants once program approval is received.
  • Provide skills training to consumers with an active Prior Authorization, following the approved Medicaid curriculum, and educate them on all phases of the PCA program, including how to be an employer, hiring PCAs, managing PCA payroll and associated paperwork, and how to manage the personal care program.
  • Conduct home visits to assess consumer needs and deliver in-person support and training.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of consumer interactions and progress in the program database.
  • Support consumers and surrogates through ongoing case management, responding to questions and changes in care needs.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary PCM team, including nurses, occupational therapists, and administrative staff, to ensure coordinated, high-quality service delivery.
  • Participate in all department meetings and trainings related to the Medicaid PCA Program.

Driving Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting at desk 50% of workday, or in vehicle. Standing and walking 50% of workday.
