Job Description & Qualifications:

Job Summary

The Supervising Clinical Veterinarian- Small Animal, is a part-time position working up to 24 hours per week and primarily supports the Veterinary Technician program through veterinary oversight of small animal care, surgeries, medications, and related clinical activities. This role serves as a subject matter expert for students, faculty, and staff in classroom and clinical settings and works closely with Veterinary Technician faculty to support safe, effective, and humane animal care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodation.

Small Animal Clinical Care and Surgical Support:

  • Provide veterinary oversight for small animals involved in the Veterinary Technician program, including animal intake, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, medications, vaccinations, and follow-up care as needed.

  • Be present for surgeries and other clinical procedures requiring veterinary oversight, ensuring safe, effective, and humane care of animals.

  • Support medication related needs, treatment planning, and clinical decision making in accordance with veterinary standards and applicable regulations.

Veterinary Technician Program Support:

  • Collaborate with Veterinary Technician faculty and staff to support clinical learning activities, laboratory instruction, and other program-related needs involving small animals.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in the classroom and clinical setting by sharing current veterinary knowledge, modeling sound clinical judgment, and reinforcing best practices in small animal care.

  • Support hands-on learning experiences that strengthen student understanding of animal care, treatment procedures, and professional expectations in veterinary settings.

Clinical Guidance and Compliance:

  • Provide guidance to students, faculty, and staff regarding proper animal handling, treatment procedures, sanitation, biosecurity, and safe use of veterinary equipment.

  • Maintain appropriate clinical protocols, treatment practices, and animal welfare standards that support safe and effective program operations.

  • Assist with documentation, communication, and coordination related to surgeries, medications, treatments, and other clinical activities.

  • The veterinarian is responsible for assuring that the Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures from classroom activities align with the expectations of the faculty, the Institutional Animal Care and Usage Committee (IACUC), and the USDA Animal Welfare Act. This role may include representation on the IACUC up to twice per year.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education: Professional Degree

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Current license, active and unrestricted, to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Wisconsin

Experience: 5 Years

Additional Experience Information:

Required:

  • Experience in small animal clinical practice, including examinations, diagnosis, treatment, medications, surgery support, and preventive care.

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, veterinary office procedures, animal pharmacology, animal diseases, clinical practices, and clinical pathology.

Preferred:

  • Experience in teaching and working with student populations is strongly preferred.
    Proficiency in the use of technology, computers, and software to support clinical responsibilities.

Ability to read, write, analyze and interpret complex documents; present topics to internal and external individuals of all levels.

Ability to perform and work complex calculations, make comparisons, interpret and provide logical explanations to others.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to critically think and solve problems involving a variety of concrete variables with limited standardization; interpret written, oral and diagrammed instructions.

Technical Skills:

Ability to perform complex operations in a variety of job-specific systems, understand functionality to apply advanced functions, manage/customize and create calculations with data.

Customer Service Skills:

Ability to understand complex concerns and formulate solutions; communicate professionally with various audiences in different situations.
