Successful candidate must have the ability to: - Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for students with multiple disabilities, including significant medical needs, physical handicaps, seizure disorders, visual impairments and intellectual impairments - Use and train staff on the use of total communication systems - Apply the methods of applied behavior analysis - Plan and implement lessons based on the curriculum that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students - Utilize specific instructional strategies and practices that allow for the differentiation of instruction to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of various learners - Use instructional technology appropriately and work with students to facilitate their use of instructional technology - Use reasoning ability to evaluate assessment data and determine/recommend an appropriate course of action - Communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form - Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups including staff, parents and the general public - Complete academic evaluations with students in accordance with state and federal regulations - Collect data to inform progress, instruction, modifications and accommodations to be considered on Individual Education Plans [IEP] in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines - Serve as liaison/case manager of students on assigned caseload, to include but not limited to: communicating with parents, colleagues, paraprofessionals, administration, and Team Chairs the student’s academic and overall IEP progress on the same team - Use contemporary professional literature, evidence-based research, and continuing education content to make practice decision - Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community - Work independently, prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneously - Perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, state and federal laws, and Grafton Public Schools policies - Work with students of diverse backgrounds with diverse needs in an equitable and inclusive manner - Maintain appropriate confidential records - React professionally and objectively to unpredictable situations (e.g. environmental changes, behavior/aggression, seizure activity, etc.) - Plan, coordinate, conduct and participate in ongoing professional and staff development. - Work collaboratively with colleagues, students and families - Explain and implement special education laws and regulations as well as academic and cognitive assessments - Perform other duties not specifically listed but required by building or district administration to enable the smooth operation of the school and the district special education program
