What are the responsibilities and job description for the Afternoon Nanny and Household Manager | Chapel Hill, NC position at North State Nannies?
A Chapel Hill family is seeking a dependable, active, and compassionate nanny/household manager to support their two school-aged children. The family hopes to find someone who can begin as soon as possible, allowing time to build a strong relationship with the children over the summer before the school year begins. They are looking for a long-term caregiver who values honesty, kindness, and consistency and is interested in becoming an important part of their family's support system for years to come. The family has two energetic and engaging boys, ages 9 and 7. The oldest is bright, curious, and highly creative. He enjoys reading, art, cooking, sports, and creating his own comic books. The youngest is playful, outgoing, and full of personality. He loves imaginative play, telling jokes, building, reading, and staying active outdoors. Both children enjoy swimming, outdoor adventures, and learning new things, and they benefit from caregivers who can keep them engaged beyond screens.
The family's primary need is afternoon support, including school or camp pick-up, transportation to extracurricular activities, preparing healthy snacks, and creating opportunities for active, screen-free engagement. The children participate in year-round activities, and the ideal nanny will enjoy spending time outdoors, supervising bike rides, visiting the neighborhood pool, and encouraging creative play and exploration. The oldest child was born deaf in one ear, so caregivers should be attentive in busy or noisy environments and mindful when supervising outdoor activities.
In addition to childcare responsibilities, the position includes light household management during the hours before school pick-up. Duties may include children's laundry, folding and putting away clothing, preparing snacks and simple meals, light meal preparation for the children, tidying children's spaces, organizing, and helping maintain household routines. The family would especially love to find someone who enjoys cooking and may be willing to involve the oldest child in age-appropriate meal preparation.
Both parents are physicians, and while one parent's schedule is fairly consistent, the other works a rotating schedule that varies from week to week. The family plans schedules well in advance and communicates any changes as early as possible. One parent may occasionally be working from home when not at the hospital, and the children's grandfather also resides in the home and is typically present during the day. While family members may be around, the nanny will have primary responsibility for the children's care and after-school routines during scheduled hours.
The ideal candidate is patient, emotionally intelligent, and experienced with school-aged children. They should be active, engaging, and comfortable supporting children with different personalities and emotional needs. The family values caregivers who can encourage independence, model respectful communication, and foster creativity and curiosity. An appreciation for diversity and openness to different cultures is important, as the children attend a dual Mandarin-English immersion program and enjoy sharing their school experiences.
