What are the responsibilities and job description for the Captain/Operations - Roving position at North Slope Borough?
Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue and emergency care during ground ambulance and air ambulance transport as needed and other tasks appropriate and in accordance with level of training. Assists with development of Public Education Program; assist with fire inspections and departmental training; travel to North Slope Villages as needed to provide support and training. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statue 18.70.The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Respond to emergencies and perform firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and medevac duties as assigned; may serve as an officer during emergencies or as assigned.
Assist in developing and maintaining fire department standing orders in manual form, with occupational safety and conformity to the National Fire Code as the primary emphasis.
Assist the Barrow Fire Chief and Village Fire Chief’s with support as needed.
Travel to and work in outlying villages to provide support and training as needed.
Assist the Assistant Chief/Training Officer and/or Emergency Services Instructor to assure training course is taught according to the lesson plan and as scheduled; maintain an adequate inventory of audio-visual and other classroom materials and assist with planning, scheduling and assisting with instructing technical classes.
Assist with maintaining personnel and volunteer training records and other documentation of employees qualifications.
Assist with coordinating special projects as needed and assist as assigned.
Assist with Arson Investigation and Fire Inspections as needed.
Assist with NSB Fire Department Explorer Program as needed.
Maintain training skills and certification through participation in applicable educational opportunities and training as required.
Maintain inventory and readiness of equipment and supplies.
Operate, clean and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical and life saving tools, equipment and facilities.
Performs other duties as assigned.Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, fire fighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.
Knowledge of fire ground operations safety.
Knowledge of pre-hospital practices.
Knowledge of methods and techniques to present training programs.
Knowledge and ability to use emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment and gear, rescue equipment and emergency medical equipment and tools.
Skill in assessing emergency medical patient care needs and providing emergency medical care, including work in aero-medical environment.
Skills in analyzing, complete firefighting and emergency services issues and developing solutions for prevention and mitigation of emergencies.
Skills in planning, organizing and scheduling technical training classes.
Skills in establishing rapport with small and large groups to facilitate effective training opportunities.
Skill in effectively presenting information in a classroom environment.High School graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and work related experience.
Emergency Medical Technician I.
Ability to obtain State of Alaska Firefighter I within one year of hire.
Three years of paid or volunteer arctic firefighting experience.
Valid Alaska Driver’s License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
