A DSP at the Day Service Wood Shop will engage with adults and older youth with differing disabilities in a wood working shop. Supporting them to use small electric tools to create wood projects, refurbish furniture, and whatever else they would like to create. Teaching/training them to use small tools to learn how to measure, cut and create wooden items. This would also include training them to sand, paint and finish wooden items.
At times, the Wood Shop DSP will be supporting the people served in activities such as swimming, bowling, plays, movies, music concerts, library activities, volunteerism with Meals on Wheels, training, role modeling, and providing them with diverse, person-centered support, allowing them every opportunity available as they live their best lives.
Job Overview
NPOC is seeking compassionate and dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSP) to join our team. In this role, a DSP will provide essential support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Supporting them to achieve their personal goals and enhance their quality of life in all aspects. As a DSP, you will work closely with the people in continuous and intermittent residential and day service settings, ensuring their needs are met while promoting independence and dignity.

Day Services are a very active type of support services. A Wood Shop DSP will engage people served in woodworking shop activities each day. There may also be days when activities such as swimming, bowling, plays, movies, music concerts, library activities, volunteerism with Meals on Wheels, training, role modeling, and providing diverse, person-centered support, allowing them every opportunity available as they live their best lives. A DSP will provide the necessary support as the person experiences numerous community outings in surrounding areas, including Ogallala.
Responsibilities
- Support people with various community and volunteer activities
- Support with daily living activities, including personal care and hygiene.
- Administer medications as prescribed and maintain accurate medication records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Teach, support, and prepare nutritious meals with and for the person with meal planning to promote healthy eating habits while understanding and applying physician-ordered nutrition programs and restrictions.
- Provide companionship and engage clients in social activities to enhance their social and emotional well-being.
- Allowing each person to have the dignity of risk, providing them opportunities they are interested in, even when it may put them at risk, for example; horseback riding.
- Supporting each person to maintain a clean and safe living environment by performing light to moderate housekeeping duties at the Residential and Day Service Sites.
- Complete daily electronic documentation of the person’s progress.
- Reporting any changes in behavior or health status to the appropriate personnel.
- Support people with living out their dreams, meeting their goals, and planning for their future goals.
- Supporting people as they experience agency and personal centered short and long trips, vacations, family visits and shopping inside and outside of Nebraska.
- Providing person-centered services that meet each person where they are and support them in increasing their skills and reaching their personal goals.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in working with adults or children with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of medication administration procedures and the ability to follow care plans effectively.
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to ensure client confidentiality and privacy.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective interaction with clients, families, and team members.
