Job Title: Medical Assistant – Registered or Certified 
Department: Clinical Support 
Reports To: Clinical Support Manager 
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 

Summary: 

The Medical Assistant – Registered or Certified (MA-R/MA-C) works in partnership with providers and the care team to support safe, efficient, and patient-centered care across the lifespan. This position provides clinical and administrative support across a varied schedule, including preventive care, follow-up and acute visits, immunizations, laboratory testing, procedures, and care coordination. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support safe and efficient patient care through timely clinical and administrative support. 

  • Provide compassionate, respectful, and age-appropriate care to patients and their families or caregivers. 

  • Maintain accurate, timely patient records in accordance with HIPAA, regulatory requirements, and NOHN policies. 

  • Support patient flow and provider readiness in a high-volume clinical environment. 

Operational Excellence 

  • Perform clinical and administrative duties in accordance with regulatory standards, applicable Medical Assistant scope of practice, and NOHN policies and procedures. 

  • Anticipate the clinical and operational needs of providers and patient schedules, including equipment, supplies, screenings, immunizations, laboratory testing, and procedure preparation. 

  • Complete and document required pre-visit, visit, and post-visit activities in the electronic health record. 

Relationships 

  • Provide individualized care that recognizes the physical, developmental, psychosocial, educational, cultural, and safety needs of patients. 

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, families, and caregivers across all ages and stages of care. 

  • Maintain collaborative relationships with providers and other members of the care team. 

Stewardship and Professionalism 

  • Uphold the values and mission of NOHN while maintaining patient confidentiality and professional boundaries. 

  • Follow NOHN policies, clinical protocols, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Maintain required Medical Assistant credential and complete assigned education, competencies, and training. 

Primary Tasks and Duties: 

  • Prepare patients for clinical examinations and visits and obtain and accurately document vital signs, measurements, and other required patient information. 

  • Perform screenings and assessments as ordered or established by protocol, including preventive and developmental screenings. 

  • Review immunization histories and prepare, administer, and document vaccines, medications, and treatments as ordered and within applicable scope of practice. 

  • Perform authorized point-of-care and CLIA-waived laboratory testing. 

  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures, anticipating workflow, equipment, and supply needs. 

  • Provide communication and support to patients, families, and caregivers throughout care. 

  • Complete post-visit activities, including documentation, patient instructions, orders, referrals, scheduling, and follow-up. 

  • Pend prescriptions, laboratory testing, imaging, referrals, and other orders; process refill requests; and sign orders when authorized and appropriate. 

  • Screen and document patient or caregiver telephone and electronic communications and route or respond according to established protocols and provider direction. 

  • Maintain exam rooms, equipment, instruments, medications, vaccines, emergency supplies, and clinical supplies according to established procedures. 

  • Recognize and promptly communicate abnormal findings, changes in patient condition, and safety concerns requiring further assessment. 

  • Reinforce provider instructions and approved patient and caregiver education. 

  • Train and mentor Medical Assistant staff and contribute to workflow and training improvements as assigned. 

  • Perform other duties within applicable Medical Assistant scope of practice as assigned. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Maintain accurate clinical and administrative documentation and effectively use the electronic health record and clinical equipment. 

  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment while organizing and prioritizing changing clinical and administrative needs. 

  • Effectively organize and prioritize multiple responsibilities while maintaining attention to patient safety and quality. 

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, caregivers, providers, and members of the care team. 

  • Provide compassionate and professional care to a diverse patient population, including patients and families experiencing challenging or complex circumstances. 

Qualifications:

Qualifications: 

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Current Medical Assistant-Registered (MA-R) or Medical Assistant-Certified (MA-C) credential in good standing with the Washington State Department of Health required.  

  • Experience: One to two years of Medical Assistant experience preferred. 

  • Skills: 

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn clinical workflows, including preventive care, immunizations, age-appropriate vital signs and measurements, screenings, point-of-care testing, and procedures. 

  • Strong communication, organization, time-management, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to anticipate patient and provider needs and reprioritize in a high-volume clinical environment. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a care team. 

  • Ability to manage difficult or emotionally charged situations professionally and compassionately. 

  • Proficiency with electronic health record systems; Epic experience preferred. 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications or willingness to learn. 

  • Language: Effective verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to speak and read English at a level necessary to safely perform the essential functions of the position. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. 

  • Ability to perform clinical duties requiring fine motor skills and manual dexterity. 

  • Ability to safely assist with positioning, measuring, and supporting patients of varying ages, sizes, and mobility needs. 

Work Environment: 

  • Fast-paced outpatient community health center serving a diverse patient population across the lifespan. 

  • Regular interaction with patients of all ages, families, caregivers, providers, and healthcare staff. 

  • Potential occupational exposure to infectious diseases, blood, body fluids, sharps, medications, and other hazards associated with an outpatient clinical setting. 

  • Noise levels are generally moderate and may include multiple simultaneous conversations, clinical equipment, children or infants, and other activity typical of an outpatient healthcare environment. 

Benefits:
