Position Title: MAINTENANCE HVAC TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Director of Maintenance, this position is responsible for providing an optimum environment for teaching and learning through the maintenance of systems which control room temperatures, to do skilled work in the installation, maintenance, repair, modification, and operation of air conditioning systems and heating, ventilating and boiler equipment, and to do other maintenance work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: An incumbent of this class is responsible and accountable for skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on varied types of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating and ventilating equipment in use by the District. Incumbents of other classes such as Electrician and Plumber may provide assistance in their specialties, but the responsibility and accountability for maintaining the overall effectiveness of the system rests with the incumbent of this class. May supervise helpers. Incumbents may be required to perform standby alert during off duty hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible and accountable for carrying out a preventive maintenance program on air conditioning and related equipment, and on heating and ventilating systems to include cleaning, oiling, boiler treatment, inspection and adjustment of equipment.
• Maintains computerized environmental control systems and diagnosis of external site HVAC issues.
• Cleans and/or assists in cleaning of air filters.
• Calibrates control systems
• Reads and interprets plans, specifications, and drawings.
• Recommends operating procedures, and instructs operational personnel on use of systems.
• Maintains and repairs small refrigeration equipment.
• Diagnoses malfunctions and makes repairs to all types of air conditioning equipment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: Minimum of three years experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning equipment and the general field of heating and ventilating equipment. One year of experience in the intermediate air conditioning maintenance technician class may be applied.
Licenses and other Requirements
• Valid California Driver's License with proof of insurance. (Must submit authorization for License Pull Notice.)
• Possession of or ability to obtain EPA 608 Certification
Knowledge of- The principles involved in heat transfer and movement of air; modern methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in the trade; appropriate building and safety code
requirements; mechanical drawing and blueprint reading; tools and equipment used in the trade; testing and inspection methods.
Ability to: Understand and work from sketches, drawings, plans, blueprints; diagnose malfunctions quickly and accurately; operate and use tools and equipment; maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work; rig and climb ladders and scaffolding; correctly demonstrate sufficient strength, mobility, and range of motion to arm lift 60 pounds and floor lift 60 pounds in an employee entrance evaluation.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• NATE (North American Technician Excellence) Certification
• HVAC Technical Training Certificate from an accredited trade school or community college
