What are the responsibilities and job description for the Varsity Softball Assistant Coach position at North Middlesex Regional School District?
The Assistant Varsity Softball Coach supports the Head Varsity Softball Coach in all aspects of the program. This role focuses on skill instruction, player development, team culture, and supporting student-athletes in achieving success on and off the field. The assistant coach works collaboratively with the head coach, JV coach, and athletic department to maintain consistency and continuity across all levels of the program.
Key Responsibilities
Coaching & Player Development
Provide instruction in fundamental and advanced softball skills including hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, pitching, and catching.
Assist in conducting structured practices that emphasize skill development, conditioning, team strategy, and mental preparation.
Offer individualized feedback to players to enhance performance, confidence, and decision-making.
Support development of teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Practice & Game Support
Assist in planning and executing practices that align with the varsity program’s philosophy.
Support in-game management including substitutions, positional adjustments, and situational guidance.
Collaborate with the head coach in scouting, strategy, and post-game evaluations.
Encourage and reinforce team culture and standards during practices and games.
Team Culture & Mentorship
Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team environment.
Support leadership development and academic achievement among student-athletes.
Serve as a role model demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and respect.
Promote social, emotional, and athletic growth of players.
Program Administration
Assist with tryouts, player evaluations, and roster management.
Maintain communication with players, families, and school staff regarding schedules, expectations, and updates.
Support equipment management, uniforms, and practice/game logistics.
Help maintain consistency in coaching, skill progression, and program philosophy.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure supervision and safety during practices, games, and travel.
Follow MIAA, NFHS, and North Middlesex School District policies.
Maintain required certifications including First Aid, CPR, and concussion training.
Reinforce safe techniques, warm-up/cool-down routines, and injury prevention practices.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategies, and skill development.
Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate high school student-athletes.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Completion of required coaching certifications and successful background checks.
Preferred
Prior coaching or playing experience at high school or collegiate level.
Experience working collaboratively with a multi-level coaching staff.
Familiarity with modern strength, conditioning, and sport-specific skill development.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices held after school; games may include evenings and weekends.
Participation in preseason planning, skill clinics, and offseason programs as permitted.
Collaboration with head coach, JV coach, and athletic department staff.
Salary : $1,208 - $1,434
