Science Teacher

POSITION DESCRIPTIONMIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERDefinition: The middle school teacher is responsible for the instruction, curriculum development and extended classroom activities associated with assigned grade levels. Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Provide academic subject instruction in science, ensuring that curriculum map and schedule are followed.Plan for class activities, including preparing units and daily lesson plans, identifying materials to implement class activities, preparing class projects, giving students feedback on completed work to insure mastery of presented material, and grading of tests and assignments in a timely manner.Confer with other teachers concerning cross-curricular opportunities.Communicate with parents on a regular basis about the schedule, assignments, events andindividual student needs.Meet with parents during scheduled conferences during the school year.Maintain grades and curriculum assessments online.Attend faculty meetings and curriculum meetings as needed.Provide academic subject instruction in science, ensuring that curriculum maps and schedules are followed.Plan for class activities, including preparing units and daily lesson plans, identifying materials to implement class activities, preparing class projects, giving students feedback on completed work to insure mastery of presented material, and grading of tests and assignments in a timely manner.Confer with other teachers concerning cross-curricular opportunities.Learns new skills and integrates technology as changing pedagogy dictates.Communicate with parents on a regular basis about assignments, events, and individual student needs.Meet with parents during scheduled conferences during the school year.Maintain grades and curriculum assessments online.Any other related duties as assigned by the Principal.Education and Experience: Masters Degree preferred; Bachelors Degree in the area of study is required with a minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably in a middle school setting; or any combination of education and work experience.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Massachusetts Teaching License with certification as a teacher at the grade 5-8 level.Skills and Ability: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on district objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.

Ability to demonstrate leadership, initiative, collaboration and independent thinking. Must possess strong people skills and emotional intelligence in dealing with students, peers and parents. Ability to work effectively with all staff at all levels of the school district; skills in oral and written communication is required.Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; for example, school supplies and books. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. The noise level in the classroom environment is moderate to loud.
