What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nissitissit Middle School Spring Track Coach position at North Middlesex Regional School District?
The Middle School Outdoor Track Coach is responsible for developing the athletic skills, teamwork, and personal growth of student-athletes in grades 5–8. The coach will create a positive, inclusive, and educational environment that emphasizes fundamentals, proper technique, sportsmanship, and lifelong fitness habits. This role fosters physical, social, and emotional development while preparing student-athletes for future participation at higher levels.
Key Responsibilities
Athlete Development
Teach proper track and field techniques for sprints, distance, relays, jumps, throws, and other events.
Encourage skill development, fitness, coordination, and injury prevention.
Help student-athletes set personal goals and track their progress over the season.
Promote self-confidence, teamwork, and a growth mindset among all participants.
Practice & Competition
Plan and conduct structured, engaging, and age-appropriate practices.
Organize and manage participation in meets, including warm-ups, event assignments, and race strategy.
Ensure athletes understand competition rules, procedures, and safety protocols.
Provide encouragement, feedback, and guidance during practice and competition.
Team Culture & Mentorship
Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful team environment.
Promote sportsmanship, responsibility, and cooperation on and off the track.
Serve as a role model, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and respect for all participants.
Encourage academic success and balance between athletics, school, and personal responsibilities.
Program Administration
Maintain communication with athletes, parents, and school staff regarding schedules, practices, and meets.
Assist with equipment management, uniforms, and safe setup of practice areas.
Monitor attendance, participation, and adherence to team expectations.
Coordinate with school administration and the Athletic Director regarding program logistics and compliance.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure proper supervision and safety of all student-athletes during practices and competitions.
Follow all North Middlesex School District policies and MIAA guidelines as applicable.
Maintain awareness of proper warm-up, cool-down, and injury-prevention techniques.
Maintain current First Aid, CPR, and concussion training certifications.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of track and field fundamentals and event-specific techniques.
Ability to teach and motivate middle school student-athletes.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Commitment to fostering a positive, educational, and inclusive program environment.
Completion of required coaching certifications and background checks.
Preferred
Previous coaching experience at the middle school, high school, or youth level.
Experience working with diverse student populations.
Familiarity with age-appropriate conditioning and skill development programs.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically held after school; meets may include afternoons or weekends.
Participation in preseason planning and optional offseason development activities as permitted.
Collaboration with Athletic Director and school staff to support student-athlete growth and program success.
