Job Title: Middle School Unified Basketball Coach
School: North Middlesex Regional Middle Schools (Grades 5–8)
Job Description:
The North Middlesex School District is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Middle School Unified Basketball Coach to lead a program that combines students with and without disabilities on the same team. The coach will focus on fostering teamwork, skill development, inclusion, and social-emotional growth while promoting a positive and safe environment for all participants.
The ideal candidate will be committed to creating an inclusive, encouraging, and fun environment that emphasizes athletic development, leadership, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Coaching & Skill Development
Plan and conduct practices that develop basketball fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and teamwork.
Adapt drills and activities to meet the diverse needs and abilities of all athletes.
Provide individualized feedback and encouragement to support skill development and confidence.
Emphasize inclusion, collaboration, and social-emotional learning through sport.
Game Preparation & Management
Prepare student-athletes for games, ensuring understanding of basic rules, rotations, and team strategies.
Coach athletes during games, emphasizing participation, teamwork, and positive sportsmanship.
Encourage learning, effort, and growth over winning while promoting a positive competitive experience.
Team Culture & Mentorship
Build a supportive, inclusive, and respectful team culture.
Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating integrity, patience, and encouragement.
Foster leadership, communication, and collaboration among all team members.
Support students’ academic and personal development while promoting the connection between athletics and life skills.
Collaboration & Communication
Communicate effectively with parents, school staff, and the Athletic Director about athlete progress, participation, and team events.
Collaborate with co-coaches, teaching staff, and other middle school staff to ensure a coordinated program experience.
Participate in team meetings, planning, and professional development opportunities.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all practices and games are conducted safely and in accordance with North Middlesex School District policies.
Monitor equipment, facilities, and athlete safety at all times.
Maintain required certifications, including CPR, First Aid, and any district-required trainings.
Qualifications:
Required:
Experience coaching or working with middle school-age students, preferably in basketball or other team sports.
Understanding of inclusion strategies and ability to coach athletes of varying abilities.
Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Ability to foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive team environment.
Preferred:
Previous experience coaching Unified Sports programs or working with students with disabilities.
Knowledge of basketball fundamentals and developmentally appropriate coaching strategies.
Experience mentoring young athletes in both athletic and life skills development.
Salary:
Per North Middlesex Regional School District Coach Stipend Schedule.
