The JV Softball Coach is responsible for leading the junior varsity program, emphasizing skill development, fundamentals, teamwork, and preparation for varsity-level competition. The coach fosters a positive, educational, and inclusive environment while supporting the personal, social, and athletic growth of student-athletes. This position collaborates closely with the varsity coaching staff to ensure continuity in philosophy and training.
Key Responsibilities
Player Development & Instruction
Teach and reinforce fundamental softball skills including hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, and pitching.
Provide individualized instruction and constructive feedback to support athlete growth and confidence.
Encourage goal-setting, perseverance, and teamwork among all players.
Promote mental toughness, sportsmanship, and positive competitive behavior.
Practice & Game Management
Plan and conduct structured, purposeful JV practices.
Manage JV games including lineups, substitutions, and in-game guidance.
Ensure alignment with varsity strategies, terminology, and program standards.
Track and monitor player development to prepare athletes for varsity participation.
Team Culture & Mentorship
Build a positive, inclusive, and accountable team environment.
Encourage leadership, responsibility, and academic achievement.
Serve as a role model for integrity, sportsmanship, and professionalism.
Support student-athletes’ social and emotional growth.
Program Administration
Assist with tryouts, player evaluations, and roster management for the JV team.
Communicate with families, school staff, and athletic department regarding schedules, updates, and athlete progress.
Maintain and organize equipment, uniforms, and practice/game logistics.
Collaborate with varsity and assistant coaches to maintain consistent coaching philosophy and skill progression.
Safety & Compliance
Supervise and ensure the safety of student-athletes during practices, games, and travel.
Follow all MIAA, NFHS, and North Middlesex School District policies.
Maintain required certifications including First Aid, CPR, and concussion training.
Emphasize injury prevention, proper warm-up/cool-down routines, and safe playing techniques.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategies, and skill development.
Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate high school JV athletes.
Commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive, and educational program environment.
Completion of required coaching certifications and background checks.
Preferred
Prior coaching or competitive playing experience.
Familiarity with JV-to-varsity player progression.
Experience working collaboratively within a multi-level coaching staff.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically held after school; games may include evenings and weekends.
Collaboration with varsity and assistant coaches, athletic department staff, and school administration.
