Position Overview
The Head Varsity Softball Coach is responsible for leading the high school softball program, emphasizing athletic development, academic achievement, personal growth, and competitive success. This role requires creating a positive, inclusive, and disciplined team culture while preparing student-athletes for success both on and off the field. The coach oversees all aspects of the program, including practices, games, mentorship, and collaboration with assistant and JV coaches.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Vision
Establish and implement a comprehensive softball program philosophy that aligns with the school’s athletic mission.
Lead the varsity program while collaborating with assistant and JV coaches to ensure consistency in coaching, training, and team expectations.
Promote the growth of the program within the school and broader community.
Represent the program professionally to athletes, families, staff, and the community.
Coaching & Player Development
Teach and reinforce technical skills including hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, pitching, catching, and game situational awareness.
Develop practice plans that balance skill development, conditioning, strategy, and teamwork.
Provide individualized feedback to student-athletes to improve performance, confidence, and decision-making.
Encourage mental toughness, resilience, and sportsmanship in all athletes.
Game Management
Manage all aspects of varsity competition including lineups, substitutions, strategic adjustments, and post-game analysis.
Prepare scouting reports, analyze opponents, and develop in-game tactics.
Promote ethical play, sportsmanship, and team accountability during competitions.
Culture, Mentorship & Academic Support
Foster a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
Encourage leadership, responsibility, and academic excellence among student-athletes.
Serve as a role model, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and respect.
Support the personal, social, and emotional growth of athletes in alignment with the school’s mission.
Program Administration
Oversee tryouts, player evaluations, and roster management for the varsity team.
Communicate regularly with athletes, parents, and school staff regarding schedules, expectations, and progress.
Manage equipment, uniforms, and field logistics for practices and games.
Collaborate with JV and assistant coaches to maintain consistent coaching methodology and program philosophy.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure the safety and supervision of all student-athletes during practices, games, and travel.
Adhere to MIAA, NFHS, and North Middlesex School District policies and guidelines.
Maintain required certifications including First Aid, CPR, and concussion training.
Promote safe training, warm-up/cool-down routines, and injury-prevention practices.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of softball fundamentals, strategies, and skill development techniques.
Experience coaching high school or competitive softball.
Ability to teach, mentor, and motivate student-athletes.
Completion of required coaching certifications and successful background checks.
Preferred
Collegiate playing or coaching experience.
Experience managing multi-level coaching staff and JV-to-varsity progression.
Familiarity with modern conditioning, strength training, and sport-specific skill development.
Experience working with diverse student-athlete populations.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically held after school; games may include evenings and weekends.
Participation in preseason planning, clinics, and offseason skill development programs as permitted.
Collaboration with assistant and JV coaches, athletic department staff, and school administration.
