Position Overview
The Assistant Middle School Outdoor Track Coach supports the Head Coach in developing student-athletes’ skills, teamwork, and personal growth in grades 5–8. The assistant coach helps create a positive, inclusive, and educational environment that emphasizes fundamentals, proper technique, sportsmanship, and physical fitness. This role focuses on providing guidance and mentorship while reinforcing team expectations, safety, and program culture.
Key Responsibilities
Athlete Development
Support teaching proper techniques for running, jumping, throwing, relays, and other track and field events.
Provide individualized coaching and feedback to help athletes develop skills, confidence, and a growth mindset.
Encourage student-athletes to set and achieve personal and team goals.
Promote teamwork, effort, and perseverance during practices and competitions.
Practice & Competition
Assist in planning and conducting structured, age-appropriate practices.
Support athlete participation during meets, including event management, warm-ups, and race preparation.
Reinforce rules, strategies, and safe techniques in all track and field activities.
Observe and provide real-time feedback during practices and meets to support skill development.
Team Culture & Mentorship
Help foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful team environment.
Encourage leadership, sportsmanship, and responsibility among student-athletes.
Model professionalism, integrity, and respect for all participants.
Support student-athletes’ academic and personal growth alongside athletic development.
Program Administration
Assist with team communications regarding schedules, practices, and meets.
Support equipment setup, distribution, and storage for practices and competitions.
Monitor attendance, participation, and adherence to team rules and expectations.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to ensure program continuity and alignment.
Safety & Compliance
Supervise student-athletes to ensure safety during all practices, competitions, and travel.
Follow North Middlesex School District policies and MIAA guidelines.
Reinforce proper warm-up, cool-down, and injury-prevention techniques.
Maintain required certifications, including First Aid, CPR, and concussion training.
Qualifications
Required
Knowledge of track and field fundamentals and age-appropriate coaching techniques.
Ability to teach, motivate, and mentor middle school student-athletes.
Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, and educational environment.
Completion of required coaching certifications and background checks.
Preferred
Previous coaching experience at middle school, high school, or youth levels.
Experience working with diverse student populations.
Familiarity with safe training methods, conditioning, and skill development programs for young athletes.
Work Environment & Schedule
Practices typically held after school; meets may include afternoons or weekends.
Collaborate with the Head Coach and Athletic Director to support athlete development and program success.
Participate in preseason planning and optional offseason skill development activities as permitted.
