Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operation and Maintenance of Water Treatment Plant:
- Operates plant, inspects, repairs and maintains all plant equipment.
- Backwashes filters.
- Operates the computer board at the plant and adjusts levels, changes flows, and determines lead/backup pumps.
- Performs water treatment tests, including chlorine, fluoridation and other tests.
- Paints, mows, and performs general cleanup tasks.
- Attends courses and workshops pertinent to the position.

Operation and Maintenance of Sewer Lift Stations:
- Monitors all sanitary lift stations, maintains sewage records regarding flow rates.
- Maintains all equipment: gates, filters, pumps and controls.
- Cleans and inspects wet wells.

Operation and Maintenance of Water Distribution Systems:
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of water mains, hydrants, valves, valve boxes and related equipment and flushing of water mains.
- Install, read and maintain/repair water meters.
- Handle complaints and questions from residents.
- Locate curb boxes, valve boxes, water mains and manholes using an electronic locator.
- Engage in collection of overdue water bills including turning off water for delinquent payments.

Operation and Maintenance of Sanitary Sewer Collection Systems:
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer mains, manholes, force mains, and related equipment, and jetting of sewer mains.
- Handles complaints and questions from residents.

Operation and Maintenance of Corps of Engineers Lift Station:
- Routine maintenance on pumps and equipment at the stations.
- Open and close gates as required due to river level.
- Clean out wet wells at the end of the year.

Daily Records:
- Conduct daily checks of both plants, wells, main lift stations, hillside reservoir, both water towers, and all 11 lift stations.
- Record hourly meter readings, flow meter readings and chemical usage in daily record books.
- Add chemicals or change chlorine tanks as needed.
- This will include completing routine preventative maintenance on all equipment.

On-Call Status:
- Must be on duty every 3rd weekend to operate water treatment plant and must be on call for any problems or emergencies that occur outside of normal working hours once the supervisor feels that the employee is competent and trained to perform the duties.

Assist Street and Park Departments:
- Assist Street Department with hauling/plowing snow and sewer problems.
- Assist Park Department with any duties that they need help with.

Operate Equipment:
- Operate several kinds of vehicles and equipment such as utility pickups, boom trucks, loaders, backhoe, trenching rigs, boom trucks, snowplows and double axle trucks mowers, chain saws, torch and air hammer, power drill, jack hammer, push lawn mower, weed whips, communication radio, mechanical, electrical or motorized equipment.
Minimum Requirements for Position
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of course work required for high school graduation or its equivalent.
- Ability to learn the operation of the water treatment plant, general mechanical and electrical and plumbing knowledge.
- Must be able to deal courteously, yet firmly, with public, and operate personal computers.
- Must possess State of Minnesota Class C water treatment operator’s license within 3 years and a State of Minnesota Class SC wastewater operator’s certificate within two years.
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class “B” driver’s license with tanker endorsement within 1 year.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work both independently and with people of all ages and abilities.

- Current Minnesota Class C or higher Water Treatment Operator’s License
- Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class B Water Treatment Operator’s License within 2 years

Position Overview
Under supervision of the Water Superintendent, this position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plants, sanitary sewer lift stations, distribution systems and Army Corps of Engineers lift stations. This position must also go on daily rounds of the water treatment plants, be on-call, and is responsible for water maintenance and construction; maintenance and installation of meters, operating heavy machinery, building maintenance work, working on hazardous and in confined areas, locating underground water and related activities, performing weekend duties, maintenance of water mains, valves and hydrants, operation of small hand tools, assist street and park departments as necessary, and operate equipment.
