Position Summary: The North Little Rock School District (NLRSD) is seeking applications for the position of Security Sergeant. This is a newly created role that will assist with the supervision of security services across all fifteen (15) school sites and across all central office departments and functions. The position assists the Director of Safety Services (Director) in the task of providing a safe and supportive learning and working environment across the entire district.
The Security Sergeant will assist the Security Captain and the building principals by providing direct supervision to the Security Officers and School Crossing Guards.
In addition, ideal candidates should be committed to high standards for safety and security with a successful background and experience working with security processes, procedures, structures, and training. The NLRSD is beginning its transformational journey to high academic excellence and the district is seeking security leaders to assist in ensuring the safety of more than 8,000 students and over 1500 employees.

The Security Sergeant's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain constant daily communication and contact with the Security Captain and the building principals concerning the day-to-day operations of school security services.
- Directs the activity of security personnel in a crisis.
- Advises and assists site-based administrators in matters involving criminal activities on school campuses.
- Advises and assists site-based administrators by providing direct supervision of campus supervisors and school crossing guards.
- Assists/advises in the development of crisis management/emergency response plans as part of each school’s safety plan.
- Prepares memos, reports, drawings, etc. related to safety and traffic issues on school campuses.
- Participates in the National Association of School Resource Officers, Association of School Safety, and other professional organizations as well as various committees related to school safety and security preparedness.
- Works directly with local law enforcement agencies during critical incident situations.
- Provides ongoing training and assistance to site-based staff in matters of safety and security services.
- Perform other related work as required and directed by the Administrator.
Competencies:
- Comprehensive knowledge of state and local policies and procedures regarding the administration of security/school safety programs.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods, and developments in the areas of security and school safety.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
- General knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration.
- Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards.
- Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements.
- Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance.
- Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age
- High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
- Three (3) years’ experience in law enforcement, security, juvenile justice or related experience.
- Must have a valid Arkansas Driver's License
- Must pass a preliminary criminal background and child maltreatment check
- Must be willing to submit to and pass a drug test upon request.
- Must be able to successfully complete eight (8) hours of initial training, including a written exam, and pass an additional background check administered by the Arkansas State Police.
- Must meet all requirements to be a licensed private security officer pursuant to Arkansas law (including, without limitation, Ark. Code Ann. 17-40-337).
Preferred Experience or Training:
- Three (3) years’ experience in school security or related experience related to the assigned job duties and responsibilities.
- Security Training Programs or other comparable training programs
- CPR/First Aid Certificate
- Experience working in an urban setting
- Training in the operation of metal detectors
- Experience in directing vehicular traffic and pedestrian crosswalks
Skills and Abilities Required:
- Ability to maintain constant two-way radio contact with other campus supervisors and the school.
- Ability to inform students and campus visitors of rules and regulations.
Knowledge and Expertise:
- Deep understanding of safety and security services models, frameworks and services.
- Strong knowledge of highly effective safety and security practices and the ability to lead others to implement these practices consistently across all school sites and central office departments while working collaboratively with local law enforcement.
Work Environment:
- Work is primarily conducted in a school setting. This position is cognitively demanding and requires especially well developed professional social skills and communication skills. Movement in and about schools and office buildings/grounds is a frequent requirement and ability to carry or lift items 75 lbs. or less.
- Must be available to work mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
