Position Summary:
This position is demanding, varied, and complex. The educator must be collaborative, a relationship builder, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be well-trained in secondary education content knowledge, and possess effective and engaging teaching strategies.
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm with a genuine passion for teaching all learners.
- Create a student-centered classroom environment.
- Facilitate students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional learning through lessons designed to sequentially develop skills appropriate to their ability and confidence levels.
- Provide engaging, fun, and effective instruction that builds a health and wellness foundation.
- Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, ensuring maximum participation and differentiating as needed for all students to experience success.
- Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Develop engaging and effective lesson plans and supplementary materials.
- Provide ongoing formative feedback to students.
- Demonstrate a growth mindset individually and support this development with all students.
- Communicate in developmentally appropriate ways through a humane, sensitive approach that clearly communicates that every student, regardless of ability, can succeed and will benefit from a physically active, healthy lifestyle.
- Implement and support school-wide programs.
- Collaborate with school team members to increase health and wellness, movement, and activity within the classroom.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas that align with the school-wide behavior framework.
- Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Evaluate academic and social growth of students, maintaining appropriate records, including report cards, attendance records, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as assigned.
- Communicate with parents, school counselors, and administrators on student progress.
- Focus on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Education: Bachelor's degree required. Must hold a valid Arkansas Teaching License with appropriate endorsement.
- Experience: At least one year of student teaching. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with students and the public in a school setting.
- Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; remains open to others' ideas and contributes to building a positive team spirit.
- Verifiable ability to work with students of varying levels of readiness.
- Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, staff, or members of the community.
- Proficiency in database software, internet software, email, and ability to proficiently use Google Docs, etc.
- Ability to appropriately communicate with students, school team members, parents, members of the community, partners, and others including vendors, law enforcement, and other agencies.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Arkansas Teaching License with appropriate certification
- This position is primarily performed indoors in school buildings, although some outdoor instruction and supervision are required.
- Frequent or prolonged standing, walking, and sitting.
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student or employee injury or illness.
- Requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling, and working with materials and objects.
- Frequent and prolonged talking/hearing conversations.
- Evenings and/or extended work hours are often required.
