Title: Job Coach, North Haven Transition Partnership (NHTP)

 

Reports to: Director of Student Services and Coordinator of Transition

 

Work Year: 2025-2026  

 

Salary: Per Union Contract 

 

Job Description:

The Job Coach provides on-site training, supervision, and support to students with disabilities at community-based work sites and internships. Working under the direction of a Transition Coordinator and the NHTP Special Education Teacher, the coach implements instructional plans to help students master job tasks, navigate workplace social cues, and build professional stamina.

 

Education/Qualifications:

High School Diploma and ParaPathways Test by May 1, 2026 or Associate's Degree.

 

Expectation and Responsibilities:

 

On-the-Job Training: Provides direct instruction on specific job tasks (e.g., stocking, data entry, food service) using "modeling and fading" techniques—initially performing the task with the student and gradually stepping back as the student gains independence.

 

Skill Assessment & Data Collection: Observes and documents student progress regarding punctuality, task completion, following directions, and social interactions to help inform their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

 

Workplace Advocacy: Acts as a liaison between the school and the employer. They educate co-workers on how to interact with the student and identify necessary workplace accommodations or task modifications.

 

Soft Skills Coaching: Teaches "hidden curriculum" skills such as appropriate workplace attire, conversation boundaries with colleagues, and how to ask for help or a break.

 

Travel Training: Often assists students in learning to use public transportation or coordinates school van transport to ensure students can get to and from their job sites reliably.

 

Additional Expectations / Responsibilities: 

  • Read and understand the basic elements of an IEP, schedules, and other support   

   plans; 

Assist students with communication, sensory, learning and behavioral challenges per 

   the direction of the certified staff; 

  • Collect behavioral, academic, social, and communication data;
  • Implement proactive behavior strategies;
  • Flexibility with reasonable assignment changes dependent on student needs;
  • Effectively communicate with teachers and other service providers as a team 

   member;

  • Willingness to be trained in and use appropriate de-escalation and physical restraint 

   techniques (Handle with Care); 

  • 1:1 support to small groups;  
  • Self-care activities, including toileting and hygiene.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
