Job Summary: Under the direction and supervision of the building principal, Director of Special Education, the Life Skills (Diabetic Support) paraeducator will assist in providing individualized support for students with diabetes, implementing health plans under nurse/teacher supervision, which includes monitoring blood sugar, assisting with insulin/medication (as delegated), managing diet, recognizing emergency signs (hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia), and helping with educational/behavioral goals, working closely with the student and school nurse to ensure health and academic success. 

 

Hours per day: 7.5

 

Essential Job Functions: This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties: 

  • Provide individualized medical support. The level and type of medical assistance provided will depend on the student’s individualized medical requirements, as directed by their healthcare plan and prescribed by the school nurse or physician. Support may include, but is not limited to, delegated healthcare tasks such as diabetes management, or other specialized medical care.
  • Work closely with both the student’s case manager and the school nurse to ensure medical needs are addressed in alignment with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and healthcare plan.
  • Maintain open, consistent communication with both the case manager and nurse to coordinate care, share observations, and ensure student safety and success.
  • Under the direction and delegation of the school nurse (Registered Nurse), perform medical tasks such as supporting seizure management protocols, assisting with personal medical care needs, administering or monitoring diabetes care, including blood glucose checks and insulin management as delegated by the RN, and carrying out any other healthcare tasks as specified in the student’s medical plan.
  • Work as part of the educational team, following the teacher’s lesson plans and providing assistance in both academic and self-help skills, ensuring the student can fully participate in learning to the best of their ability. 
  • Implement appropriate behavior management strategies and using de-escalation techniques, as necessary to ensure student safety.
  • Assist in the implementation of daily instructional lessons, following the guidance of the supervising teacher. 
  • Maintain constant supervision during the student’s movement across school property, during class transitions, recess, meals, and any other school activities. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of student medical records and personal information, ensuring compliance with privacy laws and district policies.
  • Work with the building administrator to support other areas where needed if the student is absent.
  • Participate in required training sessions, staff meetings, and in-service workshops to stay informed of updates to medical procedures, behavior management strategies, and instructional practices. 
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school district rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.

Desired Skills:

  • Willing to be trained as a PDA (Parent Designated Adult).
  • Background in medical assisting, nursing, dietetics, or similar healthcare roles.
  • Experience with diabetes devices and medical nutrition therapy. 
  • Demonstrated interest in working with students with special needs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective instructionand assessments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers to improve instruction using data to drive decision making instruction.
  • Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students, based on student needs.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in using computer technologies to enhance instruction and to manage building function

 

 Mandatory Conditions of Employment:

  • Proof of High School diploma, or equivalent;
  • Have one of the following:
  • An AA Degree from an accredited academic college or university
  • A minimum of 72 college quarter credits
  • Have passed a district-recognized assessment of basic skills and instructional proficiency (currently the ETS test)
  • Completion of 14 hours of Fundamental Course of Study training as provided and directed by the District (OSPI and PESB requirement).
  • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
  • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance.
  • Must have a proven record of punctuality and consistent attendance.
  • Must be willing and able to assist students with personal management, including toileting, changing, eating, and other personal hygiene.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.
