All internships are paid full-time summer of 2027 positions.
Summary of Work
The Bridge Inspection Intern supports the state’s NBIS-compliant bridge inspection program by assisting with field inspections of bridges, box culverts, and pipe culverts throughout the state. This internship provides hands-on experience with inspection tools, field data collection, and mobile inspection software, offering practical exposure to structural evaluation and transportation asset management. This internship involves frequent travel to field sites across the eastern half of the state. Work includes exposure to traffic, heights, water, and active construction zones.
• Assist certified bridge inspectors during routine and special inspections.
• Travel to structures across the state and help document existing conditions.
• Use inspection equipment and mobile inspection software to collect and record field data.
• Observe and learn inspection techniques, deterioration mechanisms, and safety practices.
• Support photo documentation, measurements, and basic field notes.
• Follow all construction-site safety requirements, including rules that exceed standard inspection safety protocols.
• Help maintain inspection tools, tablets, and field equipment.
• Participate in team discussions on inspection findings and structural condition ratings.
Minimum Qualifications
• Must be enrolled in an engineering technology, civil/construction engineering or similar undergraduate degree program.
• Requires ability to lift and carry a total weight of up to 50 pounds.
• Possession of a valid Class D Driver License for travel within the state of North Dakota.
Requires satisfactory completion of the interview process and successful completion of a job function screening.
