What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Scientist position at North Dakota Environmental Quality?
Summary of Work
As an Environmental Scientist in the Solid Waste Program within the Division of Waste Management at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, you will be a part of a team that protects and improves the environment by ensuring waste is managed, stored, and disposed of properly for the health and safety of our citizens.
In this role, you will:
- Review and regulate a wide variety of solid waste facilities and related activities.
- Review and prepare permits for solid waste operations.
- Analyze reports and inspection data to assess compliance with environmental control laws, regulations, and policies
- Conduct onsite inspections and field evaluations
- Prepare and monitor compliance activities and corrective actions
- Provide technical oversight, guidance, and training to stakeholders
- Enforce applicable rules and regulations related to the solid waste program
- Respond to inquiries from the public, community leaders, regulatory agencies, and business leaders regarding waste management practices and compliance requirements
While the position is based on-site in Bismarck, travel within the state, including occasional overnight stays, is part of the job (approximately 1-2 nights per month on average).
To succeed in this position, you should enjoy problem-solving and understanding how systems and processes work. You must be able to interpret complex engineering and scientific information, policies, and regulations and communicate them in a way that supports understanding and leads to compliance. You must be comfortable enforcing rules objectively, consistently, and fairly and have experience working with databases and spreadsheets.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.
DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.
To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field and one (1) year of related experience. A master's degree may substitute for one (1) year of work experience. Starting salary is $5,300/month, depending on experience.
To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field. Starting salary is $5,047/month, depending on experience.
If you have experience in solid waste management, landfill design, soil science, geology or hydrology, even better.
