What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Scientist II position at North Dakota Environmental Quality?
Summary of Work
As an Environmental Scientist in the Drinking Water Program within the Division of Municipal Facilities at the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, you will be responsible for working with public water systems and laboratories to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act. This work includes monitoring for contaminants, collecting and managing technical data, coordinating program requirements, and providing compliance and technical assistance to public and private water systems across the state.
In this role, you will:
- Work with public water systems and laboratories to collect, review, and enter drinking water monitoring data, both biological and chemical.
- Monitor compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations and support EPA SDWA primacy requirements.
- Support implementation of key drinking water programs and rules
- Maintain monitoring and sampling results in the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS).
- Provide and deliver technical training /presentations and materials to public and private water systems
- Assist with emergency responses needed.
- Prepare and deliver training or presentation materials and contribute educational content.
- Edit department digital and written documents as needed.
To succeed in this position, you must be able to interpret and apply environmental regulations; analyze and manage technical data with accuracy and attention to detail; communicate clearly and professionally with operators, consultants, laboratories, and the public; work collaboratively with internal and external partners; and maintain accurate records in state and federal data systems.
Minimum Qualifications

DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.
To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field and one (1) year of related experience. A master's degree may substitute for one (1) year of work experience. Starting salary is $5,300/month, depending on experience.
To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, environmental science, or closely related field. Starting salary is $5,047/month, depending on experience.
