Summary of Work

This position presents great opportunities across multiple programs. As an Environmental Scientist for the Leaking and Underground Storage Tank (L/UST) Program in the Division of Waste Management and the Spill Investigation Program in the Water Quality Division, you will be part of a team of scientists dedicated to the mission of the DEQ.

In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for conducting routine and tanks removal inspections
  • Oversee remediation of leaking storage tanks and general spills.
  • Follow-up on spills as assigned.
  • Assist with aboveground storage tank (AST) inspections.
  • Manage facility compliance.
  • Conduct fuel sampling for analysis.
  • Contribute to the development of online owners/operator training.
  • Respond to spill incidents and related complaints, as needed.
  • To succeed in this position, the applicant will be proficient at technical/scientific writing, reviewing documents and well versed with the remediation process using risk based corrective action (RBCA) guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

Applicants must have a valid driver's license. In-state travel is common. Out-of-State training or meetings may occur occasionally.

DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to fill the position as an Environmental Scientist I.

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor's degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, geology, soil science, environmental science, or closely related field and one (1) year of related experience. A master's degree may substitute for one (1) year of work experience. Starting salary is $5484/month, depending on experience.
