Position Summary
The Underground Construction Supervisor/Superintendent is responsible for overseeing daily field operations for utility and telecommunications underground construction projects. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with company policies, contract requirements, and regulatory standards. The position serves as the primary on-site leader, coordinating crews, subcontractors, inspectors, and internal project management teams.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Field Operations
- Supervise daily construction activities for underground utility or telecom projects.
- Coordinate labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors to meet production schedules.
- Review project scope, plans, specifications, and cost codes prior to and during construction.
- Track progress, quantities, productivity, and job completion milestones.
- Prepare and maintain accurate project documentation including daily reports, timecards, as-builts, redlines, and production logs.
- Verify utility locates prior to excavation and ensure proper installation practices.
- Time blocking daily to ensure tasks are done efficiently and on time.
Leadership & Crew Management
- Lead, direct, and support foremen, operators, and field crews.
- Set daily production goals and communicate expectations clearly.
- Assist with hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management of employees.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional conduct on job sites.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies at all times.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and job hazard assessments.
- Monitor and report incidents, injuries, and near misses in coordination with the Safety Department.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, EEO, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to adhere to safety controls and remedy situations in ever changing jobsite hazard environments
Coordination & Communication
- Act as liaison with project managers, customers, inspectors, municipalities, and utility owners.
- Coordinate inspections, permits, subcontractor activities, and material deliveries.
- Communicate job status, issues, and scope changes effectively to Project Managers.
Administrative Duties
- Review and approve employee timecards and expense documentation.
- Maintain equipment records and ensure tools and machinery are properly utilized and maintained.
- Use computer systems to manage reports, spreadsheets, schedules, and project data.
- Execute weekly/monthly production sheets, verify redline tabulations with both external and internal personnel.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED (additional education in construction management preferred).
- Minimum 3–5 years of underground utility or telecommunications construction management experience.
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience required, 3-5 years suggested
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass DOT physical and maintain medical card (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain).
- Strong understanding of underground construction methods, safety standards, and quality processes.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (Excel, Microsoft Office, project management software).
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and maps.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work performed primarily in the field and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and operation of vehicles or equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 55–75 lbs as required.
- Requires travel, on-call availability, overtime, and weekend work.
- Exposure to construction hazards, noise, and changing site conditions.
- Travel required within the United States
