- The starting pay range for this role is $19.40 - $21.13, based on education and experience.

Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- One or more years of relevant scheduling or healthcare experience.
- Excellent customer service skills
- Basic working knowledge of computers and computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook Email, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with interdisciplinary team including physicians, therapists, and nurses.
- Ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal
- Keyboarding skills including ability to use an Electronic Medical Record
- Exceptional phone etiquette
- Ability to multi-task
- Two or more years in referral coordinator in a healthcare facility, or closely related role.
- Experience working with a diverse patient population including severe and persistent mental illness and substance use
- Ability to communicate positively and with empathy
- Previous experience with Electronic Medical Records, like Cerner.
- Detail oriented
What a Referral Coordinator Does At NCHC
- Receive and process referrals from internal providers, external organizations, courts, social services, probation/parole, hospitals, and self-referrals.
- Ensure all required releases of information and documentation are obtained in compliance with HIPAA.
- Add clients into the EMR and maintain accurate demographic and insurance information.
- Conduct intake assessments (ASAM or other tools) to determine level of care and schedule admissions accordingly.
- Coordinate with detox services, schedule follow-up appointments, and provide continuity of care planning.
- Prioritize clients based on statutory or regulatory requirements.
- Verify insurance eligibility, benefits, and prior authorization requirements through portals.
- Complete and submit prior authorizations, assist with utilization reviews, and track renewal timelines.
- Provide patients with resources for obtaining or activating insurance coverage.
- Schedule clients with appropriate credentialed providers to ensure compliance and reimbursement.
- Coordinate with registration specialists and front desk staff to support smooth patient check-in/out.
- Document all client communications in EMR and supplemental systems.
- Provide educational resources to community partners and clients regarding the referral process.
- Maintain accurate records for compliance and reporting purposes.
- Respectful, professional demeanor when interacting with patients, residents, families, visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Provide in-house reminder calls to minimize no-shows.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Work performed primarily in an office or clinical reception environment.
- Frequent sitting, keyboarding, and use of office equipment such as phones, computers, copiers, and scanners.
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting 25 pounds.
- Regular exposure to background noise and tight spaces.
- May occasionally handle or be exposed to bodily fluids while maintaining standard precautions.
- Occasional interaction with clients who may demonstrate altered mental status or behavioral concerns.
