North Central Education Service District is seeking applications for the position of School Nurse. The position will support the regional school districts in Sherman, Wheeler and Gilliam Counties. The position will be based at North Central ESD and will require least monthly visits to membership districts in all three counties as well as be available for in-person or virtually visits to school district students and staff when needed.

Job Purpose Statement/s:
School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The purpose of the school nurse is to facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Job Qualifications, Licensure, Experience, and Certification:
- Registered Nurse through the Oregon State Board of Nursing
- Possession of, or ability to qualify for, an Oregon School Nurse School Nurse Certificate from TSPC
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Public Health, Nursing, Nutrition/Dietetics, Social Work, Health Education, Public Administration or other similar field or related professional experience
- Minimum of 1 year of public health, community, school or pediatric nursing (preferred)
- Certified in CPR or BLS
- Ability to communicate in Spanish (written and verbal) - preferred

Essential Job Functions:
- Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children ages 0-21
- Provides health assessments
- Obtain a health history
- Screens and evaluates findings of deficit in vision, hearing, growth,
- Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessments
- Identifies abnormal health issues
- Develops and implements a student health plan
- Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.
- Initiates referral to parents, school personnel or community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through.
- Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel or health agencies.
- Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care for students.
- Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students
- Plans and implements for school health management protocols
- Participates in home visits when indicated to assess the family needs as related to the child’s health
- Develops procedures and provides for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses.
- Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases.
- Provides health education and anticipatory guidance.
- Provides direct health education, and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health.
- Participates in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health
- Serves as a resource person to the school staff members in health instruction.
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison health professional between the home, school and community.
- Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
- Provides consultation in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for school districts.
- Where applicable, participate in the IFSP and IEP plan development.
- Provides training in delegable duties to district staff.
- Works with other nurses, district staff and community partners to provide in-person and telehealth services.
- Follows record keeping protocols and procedures that comply with both HIPPA and FERPA as required
- Assist with the Medicaid claiming process and submit claiming information.
