SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Perform duties to ensure the safe and productive life of port-owned electrical equipment and facilities. Maintain, repair, operate and install electrical components and systems in a safe and efficient manner. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and methodical troubleshooting in a way that minimizes downtime and prioritizes the needs of NC Ports. Construct, maintain, and test associated system components and controls.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
- Rely on experience and judgement to plan, execute, and accomplish assigned tasks with a wide degree of latitude.
- Maintain and repair Medium Voltage systems, 500-volt AC/DC systems, AC/DC drives, diesel electric power plants, programmable logic controllers, and all other associated control components.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, ladder logic, structured text, and function blocks.
- Analyze electrical/electronic malfunctions and diagnose the cause or causes therein.
- Perform and update preventative maintenance logs and interface with supervision for scheduling.
- Service and repair the following: crane and yard lighting, shore power systems, reefer power systems and associated controls, DC electrical drives and associated motor/ generator units, motor controls, electrical weighing systems, wind monitoring systems, electric braking and electro-hydraulic systems.
- Utilize various testing/ troubleshooting equipment including but not limited to: Digital Multimeter, megohmmeter, amp meter, infrared temperature sensing, and oscilloscope.
- Operate shop equipment such as power tools, drill press, forklifts, man lifts, etc.
- Assist Facilities Maintenance as needed for various tasks.
- Maintain an electrical library for easy reference to crane electrical schematics and electrical resources and ensure that accurate and legible prints are readily accessible aboard each crane.
- Maintain a troubleshooting log that defines electrical problems, and the necessary steps and materials required for immediate correction.
- Conduct live power checks on 500-volt circuits.
- All other duties as assigned by management.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology or related field, plus two years of electrical experience working with Industrial Controls, PLC language, 500-Volt AC/DC static converter drives, and motor generated sets, or equivalent education and experience.
- Must be able to perform basic computer functions.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
- Ongoing training on the latest technologies will be required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Conditions include working in a maintenance shop, busy cargo traffic areas, and working at heights up to 200 feet, with frequent exposure to dirt, dust, grease, oil, and adverse weather conditions. Must be able to safely access all areas and parts of large heavy equipment by means of vertical long run ladders, confined spaces, and waterside structures. Must be able to effectively use all PPE equipment and lift to 50 pounds. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, bending consistently, and work in awkward body positions. Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination. Overtime, holidays, and weekend work will be required.
