What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legislative Document Specialist position at North Carolina General Assembly?
***Recruitment Range: $40,000 - $44,500 Annually***
Please Note: This is an in-office, not remote, position.
The North Carolina General Assembly’s Bill Drafting Division provides nonpartisan drafting and revision services to the 170 Legislators and committees. The Bill Processing department within the Bill Drafting Division is seeking a detail-oriented individual with outstanding writing, editing, and communication skills to fill a Legislative Document Specialist position. The individual chosen for this position will work with the Bill Processing team to accomplish tasks associated with the creation of State legislation by reviewing and editing documents using established legislative drafting guidelines. Examples of the documents include bill drafts, proposed committee substitutes, amendments, and ratifications. Other possible duties include document preparation, proofreading draft reports and policies, office filing, and review of electronic updates to the General Statutes. The highest degree of confidentiality in document handling and processing is required of these positions.
Examples of Duties :
- Review documents for spelling, grammar, typographical, and consistency errors.
- Electronically format documents to meet drafting style requirements.
- Communicate with attorneys and other staff members to facilitate necessary document modifications.
- Monitor legislative actions in order to expedite real-time document preparation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES:
- Excellent grammar and writing skills, with superb attention to detail.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to research and organize information within prescribed, often narrow, time frames.
- Ability to identify and discuss inconsistencies within documents.
- Capacity to maintain composure in a high-stress, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain professionalism during periods of decreased activity.
- Ability to work cooperatively within a team environment.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Flexibility to work extended hours and weekends on short notice and as necessary.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in English or related field and/or work experience involving language and proofreading preferred.
- Preference will be given to those with experience in legislative document examination.
