About the Role

Reports to the Special Investigation Unit Manager. The Special Investigator will conduct a complete, in-depth and timely investigation of all assigned cases, in order to develop the information and evidence necessary to make claim handling decisions. Investigations may require coordination with local and state law enforcement and fire investigation agencies, forensic engineers, outside fire origin and cause investigators, state regulatory authorities and legal counsel. Written and detailed investigation reports are required, containing factual information and documentation, which will be submitted to claim file managers for evaluation and appropriate action.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college (CPCU, AIC, or similar designations preferred).
  • 5 years of investigation experience (public or private sector).
  • 5 years minimum Claims Adjusting Experience.
  • Experience in interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, writing investigative reports and testifying in court.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Scene Analysis (fire, water, theft and collision losses).
  • Chain-of-Custody evidence management.
  • Claim pattern Analysis and red flag identification.
  • Use of ISO ClaimSearch and other Public Information Databases.
  • Knowledge of state insurance fraud statues and reporting requirements.
  • Strong report writing and documentation
  • Interview and Statement taking proficiency.
  • Critical thinking and logical deduction.
  • Ethical Decision-Making and confidentiality.
  • Coordination with claims, legal, and underwriting departments.
  • Attention to Detail

Location & Commitments

  • The office location for the Special Investigator is in an office within the Investigators residence and/or the Charlotte District Claims Office.
  • Expected to reside in Mecklenburg County or in close proximity.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within North Carolina and occasionally outside of the state.

Responsibilities of the Role

  • Receive assigned cases and develop an effective strategy for investigation.
  • Determine the origin and cause on fire losses assigned for investigation.
  • Investigate cases where there is an indication of arson or potentially fraudulent activity.
  • Conduct appropriate investigation of any complex and sensitive cases directed to the Special Investigative Unit by Senior Claims Management, Marketing, Internal Audits or State Regulatory Authorities.
  • Submit timely factual reports with supporting documentation of the investigation conducted and the information received.
  • Attend depositions, examinations under oath with defense counsel and civil/criminal trials as directed by the SIU Field Claims Manager.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with the claims staff, providing assistance, coaching and specialized training relating to the handling of questionable claims.
  • Report to SIU Claims Manager any unassigned case that the investigator becomes aware of where there is an indication of fraud/and or arson, so that appropriate action can be taken and appropriate authorities notified.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement and fire investigation agencies, along with state regulatory authorities as well as other carrier SIU’s.
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and be able to become proficient in the use of various proprietary data base programs and on-line resources.
  • Maintain active membership and participation within industry related organizations, particularly those relating to fire, theft and fraud investigations.
  • A desire to pursue continued and ongoing training, education and professional industry designations related to the investigation of insurance claims.
