SUMMARY: The Special Education Teacher (SPED) develops and implements individualized instruction for students with disabilities, assess their progress, collaborates with parents and staff, and adapts general lessons to meet unique learning needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.   • Evaluate, monitor, provide, design, and supervise the provision of special education to meet the aptitude, interest, level of achievement and instructional needs of students qualified to receive special education.
  • Develop interpersonal relations with staff, parents and students to establish a positive school climate.
  • Continuously evaluate student progress toward instructional goals and objectives of assigned students, and adjust programming relative to that monitoring.
  • Provide appropriate preparation for state-mandated testing.
  • Utilize state and district standards in developing IEPs for students including FBAs, BIPs, and Aversive Intervention Plans.
  • Utilize effective de-escalation and therapeutic physical intervention strategies, as needed.
  • Confer with students on an individual and group basis regarding their educational, behavioral/social and physical performance.
  • Conduct parent and/or parent-student conference to interpret students’ educational, social/behavioral, and physical performance; explain and interpret program design.
  • Assume responsibility to participate as a building team member in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of school program.
  • Coordinate and collaborate programs and instruction between basic classroom and all special needs placements, including community-based options.
  • Develop and consistently implement functional life skills programming utilizing adopted curriculum.
  • Utilize building/district and community resources and support personnel.
  • Attend to the health and safety of students in the instructional setting.
  • Accept responsibility for the general supervision of students at school, at school-sponsored activities or events, and for community-based education placements.
  • Create and maintain classroom atmosphere and discipline appropriate to the particular teaching situation.
  • Communicate program rationale and procedure to staff, community, and students.
  • Keep current with educational developments within the profession.
  • Comply with district safety rules and regulations.
  • Lead a multi-disciplinary team in the development of appropriate IEPs for assigned students.
  • Collaborate and communicate with multi-disciplinary team member for the purpose of educational planning.
  • Evaluate students and interpret the results of evaluations to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Create legally appropriate goals and objects (to include, but not limited to academic, social/behavioral and life skills).
  • Use and integrate educationally relevant technology.
  • Serve as a cooperative member of the instructional team.
  • Participate in building and district in-service education/training programs.
  • Attend building/district meetings and conferences as required.
  • Direct activities of non-certificated personnel, if required.
  • Know and observe safety procedures; maintain safe working conditions; comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Valid Washington State Certification with Special Education Endorsement.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Criminal background clearance.
