Overview
The North American Bison Discovery Center in Jamestown, ND maintains two bison herds on approximately 200 acres. The Part-Time Bison Ranch Hand and Pasture Tour Guide reports to the Curator and works on the property during the summer season. Work hours may vary with possible evening, weekend, or holiday work required depending on the ranch hand schedules and associated work duties. This is a seasonal position with the potential for extension based on funding and departmental needs.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily care of bison and the day-to-day operations of the ranch, including feeding and watering, equipment maintenance, and corral cleaning, etc., while using low-stress handling.
- Report on daily livestock related activities including but not limited to animal health, weather conditions, facility conditions, forage and feed consumption.
- Ensure safety and security of all team members, equipment, forage, feed and animals.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of corrals, vehicles, and tractor shed.
- Maintain trails, maintain and repair fencing, water tanks, other ranch infrastructure, including vehicles.
- Operate and maintain ranch equipment and machinery, such as tractor, side-by-side, trucks, and portable handling system.
- Monitor the health of the herd and administer other antibiotics, fly control, and other medical treatments as directed
- Participate in roundup and transport of bison to market or new pasture if needed
- Keep accurate records of calving dates, sex, and dam
- Work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Work with the museum’s Curator and other appropriate staff to develop and implement a weed and brush control plan
- Perform general maintenance and upkeep tasks around the museum and pasture
- Provide detailed and engaging pasture tours for Discovery Center visitors
- Ensure the safety and comfort of all visitors during the pasture tour, including conducting necessary safety briefings.
- Coordinate tour schedules and logistics with the Curator or other appropriate staff.
- Maintain a current knowledge base of the North American Bison Discovery Center’s history, mission, and exhibits to answer general visitor inquiries.
- Maintain the cleanliness and operational readiness of the pasture tour truck
- Maintain a constant stock of protein treats for tours
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills & Experience
- Background in animal husbandry (especially bison or cattle) or a willingness to learn
- Equipment and maintenance and repair experience / mechanical, electrical aptitude.
- Valid driver’s license and experience operating various types of equipment and machinery (trucks, tractors, ATV/UTVs, mowers, generators, pumps, etc.). CDL a plus.
- Solid interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills
- Flexible and Adaptable—thrives in a constantly changing work environment
- Ability to work well independently, and as a team, and able to develop effective working relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
