A skilled tradesperson who uses heat and pressure to join metal parts, repair metal structures, and create various metal products. Interpret blueprints, select appropriate welding techniques, operate equipment, and ensure the quality and safety of work.
Job Functions
- Reading and understanding blueprints prior to starting a project.
- Sourcing the materials to be used in the project.
- Sets up parts to be welded utilizing fixtures and/or bench setups.
- Measuring and cutting materials to specifications.
- Welding materials using the correct welding process and materials to join the metals together.
- Utilizes grinders and torches to properly fit parts and pieces and to clean welds.
- Checking finished work to make sure that it falls within the tolerances marked on the blueprints.
- Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets, gloves, and safety glasses, and adhering to safety regulations.
- Operates forklift, cranes and hoist to lift parts and properly place them into subassemblies or fixtures for assembly. Tacking or welding and/or placing parts in storage.
- Keeps work area clean and safe by sweeping floor, removing trash and properly storing parts and materials and participating and cooperating with lean and 5S guidelines for the work area.
- Perform other assigned duties.
- Educational Background: Technical School with focus on Welding
- Experience: Two to four years related experience; Computer Numerical Control (CNC) experience preferred.
- Certification: Ability to pass certification test to AWS D1.1 for mild steel.
- Other Requirements:
- Must be proficient in blueprint reading and interpretation as well as familiar with CAD drawings
- Using Shop Math such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and other mathematical principles to solve problems encountered in manufacturing
- Set up and weld using MIG, TIG or rod
