Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year
The History and Social Sciences Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction that helps students understand historical events, civic responsibilities, and global perspectives. The teacher fosters critical thinking and inquiry by encouraging students to analyze historical sources, evaluate current events, and explore the social, political, economic, and cultural forces that shape societies.
Instruction aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning and prepares students to become informed and responsible citizens. The teacher promotes student engagement through discussion, research, and collaborative learning experiences while supporting academic success and civic awareness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from a Teacher Preparation program in history and social sciences OR Bachelor's degree with appropriate coursework for licensure as outlined by the Virginia Department of Education
- Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License

Tuberculin (TB) screening confirming absence of contagious tuberculosis
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Student Learning

Teach secondary courses in social studies, including history, geography, American government, political science, economics, or humanities using curriculum adopted by the school division.

Develop lesson plans and instructional activities aligned with division curriculum and state standards.

Encourage critical thinking, historical inquiry, and analysis of political, economic, and cultural systems.

Provide instruction that prepares students for informed and responsible citizenship.
Instructional Strategies & Differentiation

Implement a balanced instructional program that includes historical content, current events, discussion, and research-based activities.

Provide individual and small-group instruction to address diverse learning needs.

Incorporate current events and media resources to connect historical content with contemporary issues.
Assessment & Student Progress

Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments.

Monitor student progress and provide feedback to support academic growth.

Maintain accurate records of student performance and participation.
Classroom Environment & Student Support

Establish and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.

Promote positive student behavior and engagement.

Identify student needs and collaborate with school staff to address academic, behavioral, or social concerns.

Communicate with parents, guardians, and school counselors regarding student progress.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHSYICAL REQUIREMENTS:

SUPERVISION & REPORTING
- The History and Social Sciences Teacher reports to the school principal or designee and performs duties in accordance with division policies and instructional guidelines.
Salary : $60,088 - $91,800
