The Business and Information Technology Teacher provides engaging instruction in career and technical education (CTE) courses that prepare students with foundational business knowledge and practical technology skills. Instruction focuses on developing students’ proficiency in business concepts, digital tools, and workplace competencies aligned with programs of study established by the Virginia Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education.

 

Working in a classroom and laboratory environment, the teacher develops lessons that integrate theory and hands-on learning while emphasizing safe and effective use of technology. The role supports student success through high-quality instruction, ongoing assessment, and collaboration with school staff and families.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Information Technology, or a related field

  • Eligible for or currently holding a valid Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement(s)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of business and information technology subject areas

  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices and teaching methodologies

  • Proficiency in the use of computers and instructional technology

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and families

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Learning

  • Provide instruction in career and technical education courses within the Business and Information Technology program area.

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that incorporate modeling, demonstration, guided practice, and independent learning activities.

  • Deliver instruction in business concepts, computer applications, and technology processes aligned with approved curriculum and industry competencies.

  • Adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs through individual, small-group, and cooperative learning strategies.

  • Assess student performance and progress through a variety of evaluation methods and provide timely feedback.

Technology & Technical Skills Instruction

  • Teach and demonstrate skills in areas such as:

    • Keyboarding and computer operations

    • Word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software

    • Multimedia and digital technologies

    • Office productivity tools and workplace applications

  • Instruct students in the safe and effective use of computers, office equipment, and digital technologies.

Curriculum & Program Implementation

  • Utilize competency lists developed by the Virginia Department of Education Office of Career and Technical Education, along with division curriculum guides and approved course frameworks.

  • Deliver instruction in skill-based subjects such as:

    • Keyboarding Applications

    • Accounting

    • Word Processing

    • Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies

    • Office Administration

    • Computer Applications

  • Provide instruction in theory-based subjects such as Business Law and Business Management, when assigned.

Classroom & Laboratory Management

  • Maintain a safe, organized, and productive classroom and technology laboratory environment.

  • Establish and enforce standards of student behavior that support effective learning.

  • Provide safety instruction related to the operation of computers, office machines, and multimedia equipment.

  • Maintain inventory records for equipment, instructional materials, and supplies.

Student Support & Career Preparation

  • Evaluate student progress and prepare progress reports as required.

  • Assist students in developing workplace readiness skills and technical competencies.

  • Provide employment references and support students in career exploration and preparation.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain professional competence through district and self-directed professional development.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies, business practices, and instructional methods.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, school committees, and school activities as assigned.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and administrators to support instructional improvement and program success.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Work involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting in a classroom and laboratory environment.

  • Work may involve exposure to potentially hazardous situations if safety procedures are not followed.

  • Ability to safely operate and supervise the use of computers and related equipment in a laboratory setting.

Supervision & Reporting

The Business and Information Technology Teacher reports to the school principal or designee, and works in collaboration with building administrators and the district Career and Technical Education leadership team.

Salary : $60,088 - $91,800
