Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art education OR Bachelor's Degree and passing score on applicable PRAXIS exam
  • Eligible for or in possession of the appropriate teaching license from the Virginia Department of Education.
  • In-depth knowledge of art content, skills, and processes across a range of media and disciplines
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching
  • Understanding of developmental theories as they relate to art and cognition
  • Familiarity with current assessment strategies in the visual arts
  • Ability to deliver clear oral presentations and produce written reports and communications
  • Effective interpersonal skills for working with students, colleagues, administrators, and families
  • Proficiency in standard office and productivity software
  • Valid Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test (TST) certification confirming the absence of contagious tuberculosis

Key Responsibilities 

  • Instruction & Curriculum

    • Deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, crafts, and computer graphics
    • Incorporate works of art to teach art history, aesthetics, art criticism, and visual culture in meaningful and developmentally appropriate ways
    • Use and display art vocabulary consistently throughout instruction to reinforce content literacy
    • Model and demonstrate techniques and skills across drawing, painting, and other art media
    • Shape and direct student activities to ensure active, meaningful engagement in every class period
  • Differentiation & Student Support
    • Provide differentiated instruction that meets the needs and interests of a diverse student population with varying intellectual and artistic abilities
    • Supervise students during in-class and out-of-class activities throughout the assigned workday
  • Classroom & Studio Management
    • Establish and consistently maintain clear standards, routines, and procedures that govern student behavior, support learning, and ensure a safe environment
    • Organize storage areas and manage the use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or misuse, ensure safe handling, and streamline distribution and collection
    • Prompt and monitor safe practices related to the use of potentially hazardous art materials in accordance with school and district guidelines
  • Exhibitions, Displays & Community Engagement
    • Plan and prepare — or assist students in preparing — artwork for displays and exhibitions that showcase student work for the school and broader community, in alignment with NPS guidelines
    • Communicate with colleagues, parents, administrators, and community members to explain the art program, share goals, and promote student achievement

Financial & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage a supply budget responsibly; maintain required financial records and follow appropriate procedures for expenditures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or designee

Supervision and Reporting:

  • Reports directly to the principal or designee.

Working Conditions: 

  • Above average amount of walking, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in classrooms and/or art studios and/or while using an art cart and/or while displaying artwork.
  • Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards.
  • Teacher is responsible for prompting and monitoring safe practices in relation to the use of potentially hazardous art materials.

Salary : $60,088 - $91,800
