Norfolk Golf Club is a unique 9 hole golf club located in Westwood Massachusetts, 11 miles south of Boston. We are seeking an individual who is pursuing a career in the turf industry. While no formal education in turf is required, we do value prior education or plans to pursue education in the future.

We take pride in our ability to train and develop individuals, with different backgrounds, in golf course management. The successful candidate will not necessarily be the one with the most experience, but the one with the greatest desire to work in our team atmosphere while sharing our core values. It is important to note that our outgoing second assistant has used his experience with us to secure his next position, one step closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a Golf CourseSuperintendent.

The 2nd assistant superintendent is expected to be an integral part of the management team and be heavily involved in all aspects of golf course management. We operate with complete transparency and encourage team members to immerse themselves in all agronomic and business operations. This position is a tremendous opportunity to launch into the golf course and turf management fields. Some of the responsibilities include:

• Assisting in recruiting, hiring, scheduling, training, and performance management of crew. This is a leadership position which relies on motivational qualities and energy that builds a team culture among the crew. .
• Communicating with the Superintendent and Senior Assistant Superintendent in making daily golf course maintenance assignments in accordance with the agronomic / turf management plan.
• Ability to obtain Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator Licence. Work towards ensuring proper pesticide / fertilizer application and calibration.
• Assist our Mechanic to troubleshoot and maintain performance of equipment / tools / machinery.
• Assist with maintaining budgets, inventory, and other necessary projects.
• Execute a water management program that is coordinated with the Superintendent and Assistant to ensure performance and firm playing conditions.
• Troubleshoot, repair and have familiarity with irrigation systems
• Demonstrate the ability to manage and supervise crew on your own in the absence of Superintendent and Assistant.
• Work with and observe ongoing contracted construction such as bunker renovations, cart path installation, drainage projects, and irrigation installation (2028).
• Maintain a positive, respectful, attentive, and professional relationship with membership.
• Positive attitude and willingness to be coached, to learn, and to grow.

Working Hours:

Our working hours change with the seasons, however applicants can expect to work 40-48 hours per week in peak season. Tournaments and aeration events that extend hours are typically followed by time off rotated between assistants. Our goal is always to provide as balanced a schedule as possible. We work hard when the job requires it, but we decrease working hours greatly when the season allows.

Compensation:

The compensation package for this position will vary based on experience, with a starting salary between $50-60k annually. This will be determined based on experience of the individual we hire. Health Insurance will be offered in accordance with Massachusetts state law. Vacation time will be available within the first year, paid holidays begin immediately, and sick time is accrued according to state law.
