Standard Work Schedule: Standard (M-F, 8-5)

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in Microbiology and related areas.
  • Develop an independent research program that will provide avenues for grant funding.
  • Mentorship of undergraduate and graduate student research.
  • Productivity in scholarship, as measured by publications or other creative venues.
  • Assist the Biology Department with multiple undergraduate academic issues including departmental committee assignments, advising of undergraduate majors, and departmental decisions made by all faculty.
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Opportunities exist to participate in externally funded student training programs (G-RISE, U-RISE, McNair and LS-AMP)
  • Opportunities exist to access the Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research site, and to apply for research support from faculty development programs such as the NM-INBRE and U54 PARC programs.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Biology or related life science
  • Minimum of 1 yr Postdoctoral research experience or the equivalent
  • Research Productivity commensurate with experience
  • Prior teaching experience desirable
  • The Department is broadly interested in candidates whose research focuses on the interactions between symbiotic or pathogenic microbes and their animal hosts, using state-of the field approaches. Applicants with expertise in the use of mammalian models is especially desirable

Equivalent Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • teaching in areas of expertise (Microbiology), 2) the transformation of research concepts and ideas into research design.

Skills in: Teaching undergraduate and graduate students, student mentorship, research area of expertise (Microbiology, host-microbe interactions), and experience in service to their discipline.

Ability to: Direct, evaluate, train, and supervise the work of assigned personnel; develop and maintain effective working relationships; maintain accurate and orderly records; use independent judgment and initiative; organize and direct activities; analyze and evaluate information

Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

Grants Campus

NMSU Grants was established as a branch of New Mexico State University in 1968 through the cooperative efforts of New Mexico State University and Grants Municipal Schools. As a two-year branch community college, NMSU Grants serves the local communities in Cibola and McKinley counties, including the Pueblos of Acoma, Laguna, and Zuni, as well as Tohajiilee, San Mateo, San Rafael, Cubero, the City of Grants, and the Village of Milan.
