FITNESS TRAINER
Under the Direction of a Physical Therapist
Overview
As a Fitness Trainer working under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist, you will support clients as they carry out their prescribed exercise programs. This role requires close adherence to the Physical Therapist’s treatment plan and consistent monitoring of client progress, goals, and safety. You will help clients improve strength, mobility, endurance, and confidence while reinforcing the PT’s clinical recommendations. Your understanding of exercise science and body mechanics will contribute to a positive, motivating environment that supports long-term wellness.
Responsibilities
- Follow the Physical Therapist’s treatment plan exactly as written, including exercises, progression, and safety precautions.
- Guide clients through their prescribed strengthening, stretching, mobility, and conditioning exercises with proper technique.
- Monitor and document client participation, progress, tolerance, and any difficulties during sessions.
- Follow up with clients on treatment goals set by the PT and report all progress or setbacks.
- Identify any pain responses, red-flag symptoms, or concerns and notify the Physical Therapist immediately.
- Reinforce home exercise programs and PT instructions to ensure consistency and adherence.
- Assist with group-based stretching or low-intensity fitness sessions as approved by the PT.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized training space and prepare equipment as needed.
- Educate clients on basic anatomy, posture, and body mechanics within the non-clinical fitness scope.
- Support client motivation, confidence, and consistency throughout their treatment plan.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of exercise science, physiology, anatomy, and coaching principles.
- Experience in fitness training, group instruction, or athletic conditioning.
- Ability to follow clinical direction and remain within a supervised scope of practice.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and guide clients.
- CPR/AED certification required or obtained upon hire.
- Fitness certification (NASM, ACE, ISSA, ACSM, etc.) preferred.
- Experience in a rehab, gym, or wellness environment is preferred.
