Hours per Week 37.5 Months per Year 12 Purpose of Position
The Costume Shop Coordinator will manage operations and assist with 6-7 main stage productions, additional showcase productions, 5 touring outreach troupes, and a summer season. Training students in costume construction is a major part of this position. NKU Theatre & Dance has over 250 majors, and offers a B.F.A. in design/technology.
Primary Responsibilities
This position assists the Faculty Costume Designer in training students, supervising the costume shop, and maintaining shop equipment and costume stock. Creating and sustaining a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment is essential, along with active participation in the collaborative production process. The position is responsible for establishing, teaching, and enforcing shop safety procedures in compliance with OSHA standards.
The role requires expertise in all areas of costume construction, crafts, and shop tools, along with the ability to effectively teach these skills to students working in the costume shop laboratory. The Costume Shop Coordinator also trains and supervises costume run crew members for all productions. Experience in makeup and hair design and application is desirable.
Responsibilities include maintaining shop equipment and inventory; ordering supplies; purchasing materials for production builds; managing production budget accounts; and organizing costume storage areas. The coordinator will also drape, draft, pattern, cut, and construct costumes, in collaboration with the Costume Designer, to ensure the timely and efficient completion of productions.
Qualifications
B.A. or B.F.A. in Costume Construction/Technology or a closely related field, with basic knowledge of costume history, design and costume construction. 2–3 years of related professional experience preferred, demonstrating engagement in a collaborative production process.
Equivalent qualifications may include five years of professional experience in lieu of a degree, an M.F.A. in a related field, or college-level teaching in costume construction/technology.
This position involves flexible hours based on production schedules.
