Summary
- The Assistant Vehicle Engineer will be responsible for providing technical support to Project Managers in the department on rolling stock procurements and reliability programs, while also providing administrative support on equipment reliability programs as required.
- Prepares and review concepts, budgets, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and/or meeting minutes for assigned rolling stock projects.
- Maintains familiarity with constantly changing federal codes and other government rules and regulations.
- Provides staff support to design consultants and senior management.
- Performs and review inspections and witnesses’ static/dynamic testing of rolling stock vehicles.
- Evaluates modification requests and performs necessary administrative tasks.
- Evaluates change requests and/or orders, reviews technical questions and advises project managers of same.
- Reviews and prepares cost estimates for rolling stock procurements and consultant contracts.
- Interprets and analyzes data pertaining to rolling stock equipment to ensure operational and maintainability requirements are satisfied.
- Reviews and approves invoices for payment, prepares memos and letters, tracks open items, writes meeting minutes, updates progress reports, and attends and coordinate meetings.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with preparing concepts, budgets, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and/or meeting minutes for assigned rail rolling stock projects required.
- Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience may be substituted for a Bachelor’s degree.
- Must have a valid US driver’s license.
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to work in a self-directed manner, effectively interact in project teams, and complete assignments and deliverables in a timely and accurate fashion.
- Must have an understanding of the NJ TRANSIT’s system and the services it provides.
- Must have a good understanding of mechanical and electrical concepts.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Project is preferred.
- 60% in office, 20% in field, 20% travel
- Ability to climb on/off rolling stock to conduct research and collect data, bend, kneel, crouch, and walk around for an extended period of time.
