What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Manager position at Nj Tax Advisers?
NJ Tax Advisers is hiring a Tax Manager to lead our tax practice. You’ll run the review and routing layer for our preparers, and you’ll also be expected to prepare returns. During tax season, it’s all hands on deck, and that includes this seat. You’ll take over the book of a recently acquired CPA practice while the retiring sellers are still available to transfer what they know, and you’ll become preparer of record after your first season. We plan to acquire another firm within the next year, and you’ll help integrate that one, too.
We’re young, hungry, and all about growth. NJ Tax Advisers launched in 2024, bought our first CPA practice in 2026, and we’re already working on the next one. That’s the difference between us and older firms that are just filling a chair: we’re dynamic, enterprising, and building something, and the person in this role helps build it with us. We’re a tax planning firm first and a preparation firm second, serving small business owners and nonprofits across the US, and our model turns financial data into plain-language advice clients can act on.
What you’ll do
Prepare and finalize individual and business tax returns (1040, 1065, 1120S, 1120, 990) in Lacerte and ProConnect. This isn’t a review-only seat: you’ll prepare your share of returns, especially in season. Route work across our preparers and manage the season workflow. Sit with the sellers of the practice we acquired and document their clients, workpapers, and conventions before they step away. Handle IRS and state notice escalations. Build the integration playbook we’ll use on the next acquisition.
What we’re looking for
An active CPA license and/or EA credential, since you’ll be signing returns. You must be authorized to work in the US. Broad experience across corporate and pass-through entity compliance (1120, 1120S, 1065, 1040, 990), with the confidence to handle complex reporting matters. 5 years of tax experience, including final review of other people’s work. Experience managing preparers. What will really set you apart: you’ve taken over another accountant’s book before, through a purchase, a merger, or a retirement, and the clients stayed. Lacerte fluency is a real advantage here, since the practice we acquired runs on it. ProConnect experience helps too, because our organic book lives there, and familiarity with UltraTax is a plus.
Just as important: we want someone entrepreneurial. Our growth model is buying firms and integrating them, and you’ll be in the center of that with your own team. If you’ve ever thought about building a practice of your own but didn’t want to start from zero, this is that job with the client base already in place.
Where you’ll work
This is an in-person role at our Broad Street office in South Philadelphia, where the practice we acquired has served its clients for decades.
Compensation and path
$95,000 to $125,000 base depending on experience, plus a season bonus tied to filing deadlines, accuracy, and client retention. You'll be the preparer of record after your first season. Department head role as we acquire.
How to apply
Send your resume and a short note that covers: (1) a time you took over another accountant’s clients or worked through a practice transition, and how it went a year later, (2) your review process and what you catch that preparers miss, (3) a preparer you developed and what changed.
Salary : $95,000 - $125,000
