Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Teacher to join our Head Start educational team. The Assistant Teacher will support the Lead Teacher in creating a nurturing, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that promotes school readiness for all children. This position plays a vital role in helping to implement the Head Start curriculum, ensure compliance with performance standards, and foster the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth of each child.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Teacher in planning and implementing developmentally appropriate lesson plans that align with Head Start Performance Standards and the agency’s curriculum.
- Support individualized learning by adapting classroom activities to meet the unique needs, strengths, and interests of each child.
- Promote positive guidance and social-emotional development through consistent and nurturing interactions.
- Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all children at all times, following agency policies and licensing regulations.
- Engage in daily routines such as meals, toileting, and rest time while modeling positive behaviors and self-help skills.
- Help maintain an organized, clean, and inviting classroom environment that encourages exploration and learning.
- Assist in ongoing child assessments by observing, documenting, and communicating developmental progress to the Lead Teacher.
- Support family engagement by building positive relationships and participating in family activities and conferences as requested.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and contribute to a collaborative team culture that supports the goals of the Head Start Program.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold all agency, state, and federal policies and regulations.
Qualifications and Requirements
- A minimum of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent in Early Childhood Education; an Associate’s Degree is preferred.
- Prior experience working with preschool-aged children (ages 3–5) in a Head Start, childcare, or early education setting.
- Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, early learning frameworks, and child development principles.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact positively with children, families, and staff.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
- Commitment to maintaining a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that reflects diversity, equity, and respect.
- A genuine passion for helping young children learn, grow, and thrive in a nurturing educational environment.
