(NCI) is a family-owned and operated Construction and Contracting business headquartered in Columbia, MD with offices in Richmond VA, Royal Palm Beach and Orlando FL with a team of 170 plus employees. NCI is a full-service general contractor focused on providing premier services in all aspects of the construction process, from concept to completion. NCI services a diverse group of markets including federal, state, and local governments, as well as a variety of corporate and special industry organizations that require complex life safety and critical infrastructure needs.
Nichols Contracting is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Staff Accountant to join our growing construction team. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for supporting the company's financial operations through accurate accounting, job cost reporting, account reconciliations, and financial analysis. This role plays a key part in maintaining financial accuracy across multiple construction projects while ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
The ideal candidate will have strong accounting fundamentals, experience in the construction industry, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Essential Functions:
- Prepare and maintain monthly journal entries and general ledger reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Reconcile bank accounts, loan schedules, and balance sheet accounts.
- Support project accounting activities, including job cost tracking and analysis.
- Review and monitor project expenses to ensure costs are accurately allocated.
- Prepare financial reports and variance analysis for management.
- Maintain fixed asset schedules and depreciation records.
- Assist with preparation of external audits, tax filings, and financial reviews.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiencies within accounting functions.
Desired Skills and Competencies:
- 2-5 years of accounting experience preferred.
- Previous construction, contracting, engineering, or project-based accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with job cost accounting and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting is a plus.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of construction accounting practices, including job costing and project billing preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
- Experience with ERP systems such as Sage, Viewpoint, , CMiC, Foundation, or similar platforms is a plus.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
