The CNC Operator at Backer Hotwatt, Inc. is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to manufacture precision components that meet engineering specifications and quality standards. Working under supervision and following production schedules, the CNC Operator performs machine setup, verifies part quality, conducts routine maintenance, and supports continuous improvement and workplace safety initiatives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

    Set up and operate CNC machines according to engineering drawings, work instructions, and production requirements.

    Load raw materials and secure workpieces using appropriate fixtures and tooling.

    Select and install cutting tools, offsets, and machine settings as required for production.

    Monitor machine operations to ensure parts are produced within required tolerances and specifications.

    Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments.

    Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, work orders, and process documentation.

    Make minor machine adjustments and tool offset changes to maintain dimensional accuracy.

    Identify and report equipment malfunctions, tooling issues, or quality concerns to supervisors or maintenance personnel.

    Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventative maintenance tasks.

    Replace worn tooling and maintain tooling inventory as needed.

    Maintain accurate production records, inspection reports, and downtime documentation.

    Remove and identify non-conforming materials following company quality procedures.

    Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

    Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area using 6S principles.

    Work collaboratively with Production, Engineering, Quality, and Maintenance teams to meet production schedules and continuous improvement objectives.



What We Are Looking For

Requirements

    High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.

    Previous experience operating CNC machining equipment in a manufacturing environment.

    Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.

    Experience using precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and gauges as required.

    Understanding of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and tolerances.

    Basic knowledge of CNC machine controls and machine setup procedures.

    Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot minor machining issues.

    Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

    Good communication and teamwork skills.

    Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.

    Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.

    Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

    Manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination.

Preferred Qualifications

    Experience operating CNC mills, CNC lathes, or multi-axis machining centers.

    Experience working with stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, or other production materials.

    Familiarity with Tsugami Haas, or similar CNC control systems.

    Ability to edit simple CNC programs or make tool offset adjustments.

    Basic computer skills for production reporting and machine interface systems.

    Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and 6S principles.
